  • Back to basics off-grid site under 15 minutes' drive from Forfar
  • A 15-minute drive from the Angus coast and 25 minutes from Dundee
  • Indoor kitchen, plus wildlife pond, nature trails and kids' art shack
Beaches, mountains, ancient buildings and cool urban wanderings… all are within easy reach of Greenhillock Glamping, a spacious family-oriented glampsite in the Angus countryside just under 15 minutes’ drive from Forfar town centre. Getting around from this handy location is pretty straightforward, as it’s just a few minutes’ drive from both the A90 and the A92. And yet the vibe on site is very much one of rural peace: this is an off-grid place that’s been set up to make the most of its natural surroundings, with eco-friendly additions like eco composting toilets and solar or gas-powered showers to help preserve the environment. This is, in fact, something of a haven for free-range families: there’s plenty of den-building material around for kids’ constructions, and a wildlife pond has lots of wooden platforms for dipping in the water (plus some basic science equipment to help you identify what you’ve found). There are plenty of ways to explore the site’s natural attributes too: for starters, you’ll have five acres of wildflower meadow at your disposal, along with nature trails mown into the long grass and stretching off into the surrounding copse like something of a natural maze (a very handy way to amuse the kids for a while…) Panic not if the weather takes a turn: creative kids should find plenty to play with in the art shack, and there’s a field kitchen with cooking facilities, eating space and a woodburning stove to ensure meals can be had in the dry. Other facilities include a covered washing-up area and three communal barbecues.

Primitive grass tent campsite (adults only)

Liked: A wonderful site. Got a personal tour of the facilities on arrival, there's a separate quiet field for campers without kids, which is rewilded meadow so lots of birds and butterflies everywhere. Freshly fired pizza on-site for dinner on a Saturday night too! Will definitely be back.

Bell tent

Liked: Great vibes on this campsite! With solar showers, rewilding areas full of wildlife, alternative buildings and composting toilets a wonderful place to enjoy a holiday! Parking is away from the tents and barrows for transport, it keeps it wonderfully unspoilt. Due to the weather and availability we were upgraded to a Hobbit House, it was a perfect stay 🥰

Disliked: Low doorposts of house and toilets, which was more of a problem for my tall husband though 😆

Primitive grass tent campsite (adults only)

Primitive grass tent campsite (groups only)

Liked: We really enjoyed the space we had on this campsite as well as the extra facilities around the camp. We had lots of kids with us and they loved roaming around and playing among the wildflower meadow. The firepit was great for gathering around and the solar showers, whilst not great, were passable and allowed us to get clean.

Disliked: A couple of the composting toilets had gone a bit wrong and smelt terrible and it would have been good to see these swept out. We had fun at the BBQ evening but were disappointed at the basic nature of some of the food on offer.

Primitive grass tent campsite (adults only)

Liked: Location of the camp site is nice. Other than that not much more I can like about the campsite.

Disliked: Over price campsite that we have been on. It is more like wild camping with a price tag. And the first night there was a few adults that had a few to drink even after quite time loud talking and laughing so the first night did not have a good sleep. 2nd night was better. Shame we could not stay on the campsite during the day but with facilities did not allow us to this.

From the manager: We were beyond disappointed to read Alister's review. Alister contacted us in advance to say he had not realised there was no parking adjacent to the pitches (this is clear on the features tab of our Pitch Up listing) and this was a problem due to mobility issues. We offered him the option to change his booking to a different date when we had standard pitches nearer to the carpark available but he declined. We took the decision to move Alistair's booking from a grown-ups pitch costing £25 per night to our group pitch, just a 10m walk from the carpark (which usually costs £75 as it accommodates three families) at no extra charge. Alister was offered exceptional value for money for his stay. Alister has rated us as two from five for customer service. Every customer is offered a show round of the site on arrival and our small team of me - Kate, and Stig are always on hand to help with guests needs, including on occasion lending complete tents to guests who have left their tent poles at home and moving people from their leaking tents to our glamping accommodation at no charge. We offer pizza nights on Saturdays and breakfast rolls on Sundays, free drawing materials in our Art Shack and access to our Field Kitchen for rainy days. We offer impeccable customer service and this rating is unfair. I personally checked Alister and his partner into the site with a friendly and helpful explanation of our facilities and the offer of the pitch upgrade. They explained they were staying due to a family event taking place at a nearby caravan site. They indicated they were not planning to stay on site due to visiting family so its unclear how our facilities impacted them not feeling able to stay on site since they had no plan to do this to begin with. They had a perfectly amenable conversation with Stig whilst on site and made no mention of any problems. We advertise our low-noise policy widely and it is emailed to each guest as part of their booking confirmation. We do enforce the 10pm sound curfew but cannot police every single guest throughout the night. We are sorry Alister was disturbed in the night by unthinking guests. Alister has rated us as one from five for child friendliness. He was not travelling with children. We are highly rated as a child friendly site and have many families who return to us year on year citing facilities for children as the reason. This rating is also unfair. Our facilities are cleaned three times a day by myself or Stig. There is a mobile number to call or text if the standards of cleanliness do not meet guests expectations. We received no report of problems from Alister (or anyone else) during his stay. We do not offer wi-fi, we are an off grid eco campsite. At Greenhillock we pride and advertise ourselves as being back-to-basics camping. For the prices we charge we have a wide variety of facilities but we are, at our heart, a site dedicated to offering a near wild camping experience with the right facilities close at hand. This is clear on our Pitch Up listing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The folks at Greenhillock were fantastic, we did an on the fly upgrade to a hobbit house which they sorted for us whilst we got something to eat in Arbroath. The Hobbit house was well equipped and fantastically insulated. The closest I could come to a complaint is more a warning, pay attention when staying in a hobbit hole when 3 of your party are 6'2" and over...hobbit doors aren't that tall :D The eco conscious nature of the site really resonated with us too.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Very nice location and surroundings. Liked the pitches being quite far apart so felt as close to wild camping as possible which was nice. The staff are very friendly and great to chat to and are very enthusiastic about there eco set up which is really cool. The pizza night was an added bonus and definitely a great idea! Thanks again from the wombwells !

Disliked: It may have been that during our stay a couple of large groups were also there which caused the compost toilets to become quite unsanitary. Would be beneficial to be cleaned every couple hours in high usage times just to keep on top of it. The solar shower didn't really work during our stay as was cold, would recommend a joolca system or something to bridge between the less sunny days so warm showers are possible.

Local attractions

Which way first – coast or mountains? If you select the former it’s a drive of about 15 minutes to the famed seafront golf course at Carnoustie, 20 minutes to feast on seafood in Arbroath or half an hour to the spectacular sands of Lunan Bay (which the owners say is among their favourite places on earth…) Heading inland instead, mountain climbers can get to the Cairngorms National Park with a drive of 40 minutes or so. For less challenging activities, try walks in the forests, hills and streams of the Angus Glens (20 minutes’ drive) or watersports and bike trails in the nearby country parks. Make time too for a trip to Dundee (25 minutes), a city that’s got UNESCO City of Design status and attractions like the RRS Discovery, the ship that made the first successful journey to the Antarctic. On top of that, get to grips with Scottish history at Glamis Castle (20 minutes), said to be one of the finest in the land, and meet some of the more sizeable native beasts at Camperdown Wildlife Centre (25 minutes).
