  • Luxurious glamping site at Strathdon in the Cairngorms National Park
  • An hour to Aviemore ski slopes and half an hour to Balmoral Castle
  • Stylish wooden lodges with kitchens, private bathrooms and hot tubs
You’re in for more than a wee surprise at Sweet Donside Cabins, super-luxurious and super-stylish glamping set in remote Strathdon, deep in the Cairngorms National Park. It’s gorgeous. Accommodation is in designer-y wooden lodges, each one themed differently and prettily decorated for romantic and boho, adults-only getaways. Each unit comes with a proper kingsize bed, kitchenette and contemporary bathrooms with hot showers – plus a living area, TV with Netflix and decent wifi so you can signal your good luck to everyone back home. Bed linen and towels are provided, and you can pop outside to your private, woodfired hot tubs in comfort (firelighters and wood provided on site). Also on the decking is a charcoal firepit with a barbecue and tripod – the owners supply charcoal at a small cost, or you are welcome to bring your own. And the thoughtful extras just keep on coming – on arrival a welcome hamper awaits so you can get your holiday started straight away. When supplies start to dwindle, you can stock up at the cracking local shop at Bellabeg (five minutes’ drive), which opens every day. When you’ve done exploring your luxuriously appointed and oh-so-stylish lodgings, there are nine acres of grounds including woodland to call your own. Likelihood is you’ll meet the owners’ hens and ducks on your ramblings – apparently they’re keen on a bit of interaction with guests, so do say hello to them. Please note that the accommodation's fences are not dog-proof, so you will need to keep any pets on a lead at all times.

Local attractions

Sweet Donside Cabins are a stone’s throw from the Rrver Don and the 300-year-old Poldullie Bridge at Strathdon (just over the road), a historic landmark built by Jacobite rebels and now enjoying a moment of fame as its single stone span starred in the film ‘Mary, Queen of Scots’. Your luxurious bolthole in the Cairngorms National Park is also close to several malt whisky trails, taking in fabled names such as Dalwhinnie (1.5 hours’ drive) and Glenlivet (40 minutes). You can also tour several castles, including HRH The Queen’s Scottish home at Balmoral (when she’s not there sadly), pink-stoned, turreted Craigievar (both half an hour) and whitewashed Corgarff (10 minutes). The park is one of the outdoors capitals of Scotland, where you can walk through forests and spot red squirrels and occasional golden eagles, visit the osprey nesting site at Boat of Garten (50 minutes), or enjoy walks up craggy Ben Newe (10 minutes). In winter, grab your skis and head to the pistes at Aviemore (an hour) or The Lecht Ski Centre (15 minutes), and in summer, take to Loch Morlich (an hour and 10 minutes) for canoeing and kayaking adventures.
