Cairngorms Glamping: Motorhome pitch

General

  • Quiet and scenic campsite in Britain's largest national park
  • A mile from Strathdon; an hour and a quarter by road from Aberdeen
  • Small on-site shop and free animal petting corner

For spectacular scenery, there's nothing quite like a stint in the Cairngorms National Park. They do rugged and remote rather well in this part of Scotland – the area is home to a quarter of the UK's rare and endangered species, four of its five highest mountains and over 60 separate lochs.

Exploring all of the above day after day is tiring work, so you'll want to find somewhere to rest up and relax after gallivanting through the Highlands. Enter Cairngorms Glamping, a low-key but scenic site in a quiet corner of Aberdeenshire.

All plots here come with their own water and power supply and have an excellent outlook over the neighbouring countryside. There's plenty of space to spread out over the well-kept grounds, plus a small on-site shop where you can pick up a few basics and last-minutes snacks.

Cairngorms Glamping also has an animal petting corner, where friendly creatures like donkeys and golden pheasants look forward to meeting you. Up at the top of a hill, there's also a naturally occurring pond, so dragonflies, ducks and other wildlife can be spotted too.

Cairngorms Glamping is roughly a mile from the village of Strathdon, which is home to a small but well-stocked supermarket.

The campsite was fab for my 5 year old. He loved the animals and being able to get close to them. The site was great for him to be able to run around freely in the field. The facilities were also good and the staff really friendly and welcoming. The site was really peaceful

    Disliked:

That there was only 1 shower. The shower is also in with the toilet, leaving only one other toilet to use if someone was in the shower. The site was quite full and we worked out that there was about 30 people using 2 toilets and one shower. Another shower and toilet would be fab

Loved the donkey, pony and goats (ps, also sheep!) Lauren was so friendly and bubbly! She made our stay all the more better with our campfire chats!
Shower and toilet were super clean and well supplied and having a wee shop on site just topped it all off!
We will definitely visit again with our children as it is also so child friendly!

Really child friendly, dog friendly site - owners were very welcoming. Kids particularly enjoyed meeting the animals at the petting farm and making loads of friends. All tents/campers are pitched at the edge of a circular site and the children all played together in the centre with swing ball etc - was very relaxed and felt very safe as you could see them all play. We had a lovely stay.

Local attractions

Looking to lounge about locally? Goodbrand and Ross gift shop and restaurant is a good place to grab a bite to eat or buy a few presents for folk back at home, while the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games take place annually a couple of miles to the north. For further typically Scottish attractions, try visiting one of the many distilleries in the area; the closest is roughly 30 minutes away.

The Cairngorms is also uncommonly rich in castles, including the well-preserved ruins of Kildrummy Castle (20 minutes) and gorgeous 17th-century Braemar Castle (40 minutes). Balmoral (30 minutes), the long-term summer residence of the British royal family, will also be high up on the list of those seeking impressive architecture, art and antiques.

Your hosts also recommend taking the time to drive out to Landmark Forest Adventure Park (an hour), a kid-oriented spot with a climbing wall, high ropes course, maze and rollercoaster. You might also like to drive east to the Grampian Transport Museum's top collection of exhibits (35 minutes), or to carry on all the way down to the North Sea coast at Aberdeen (an hour and a quarter).

Must see

  • Balmoral Castle (11.6 miles)
  • Glenlivet Estate (12.1 miles)
  • The Glenlivet Distillery Visitor Centre (14.7 miles)
