General

  • Wild camping at an outdoor activity centre five minutes from Aboyne
  • A 15-minute drive to Craigievar Castle; half an hour to Balmoral
  • Farm shop and restaurant on site; fishing, archery and go-karting

Off to the Aberdeenshire countryside in search of adventure? There’s plenty of that at Deeside Activity Park, five minutes’ drive from Aboyne. This is a place that’s packed with things to do, including days of quad biking, archery, clay shooting and go-kart racing… and all right there where you’re staying.

Got your eye on some fishing while you’re in the area? The River Dee is just down the road for experienced anglers, and there’s a well-stocked loch on site too, where you can do some catch-and-release fishing, hire kit and take lessons from an expert ghillie to learn the essential techniques.

The camping setup here has a sense of adventure about it, too: this is a wild camping park where you’ll need to forego many of the trappings of modern life (although you’ll have access to a chemical toilet and a firepit where you can have a go at building a campfire). Well-behaved dogs are welcome as long as they’re kept on a lead.

All this activity requires a good amount of food, of course – and handily, that’s easy to source at this park. The on-site restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch, and you can also pick up hot drinks and home-baked treats during the day.

Rather stick to the alfresco approach? Bring along a barbecue and source supplied at the site’s farm shop, which is stocked with its own award-winning Aberdeen Angus beef (from the farm a mile and a half up the road) alongside local pork, sausages, fresh veg, eggs and little extras like local biscuits.

BBQ and fire pit was fab, and the location and views are stunning. Great location at Deeside activity park - lots to do and a nice little sandpit and sledging bit for the kids/ We waked to Dess waterfall from the campsite which was a nice morning out

    Disliked:

Portaloo's fine, but there wasn't any way to wash hands. I'm happy with wild camping but would've appreciate a tap near the toilet, and some hot running water/ somewhere to wash up. Quite expensive for the facilities (£10/ night for a three year old - why?!)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on your lovely campsite area. We all went as a family and had the whole area for our tents only , which gave us privacy and we were then able to enjoy family time and activities without the worry of disturbing other campers. Thank you all so much for our lovely stay and we all look forward to returning to the lovely site . Thank You

Location so peaceful, activities and restaurant on site, great place to star gaze. Wild camping without being a long trek from the car park.

    Disliked:

Portoloo - cramped and v smelly in the hot weather. More marked walks around the woods would have been nice.

Everything - the customers leaving bad reviews have to remember this is aimed at wild campers or those with some experience camping! Our o2 and Vodafone phones had signal now and again but it was actually quite peaceful not having a signal at times! Farmer Ken was polite, cheery and helpful and made the effort to get the craic with the kids which they thought was great! We only managed to fit in some shooting and quad biking in our 4 days there as we were off around the area visiting castles etc! Our instructor was patient and very helpful and we had a great time! There is a communal fire pit and bbq but if you ask Farmer Ken and as long as your travel fire pit is a bit off the ground he’ll give you permission to use it! A few weeks of very dry weather and dry ground I would have understood if he didn’t allow it! We’ll definitely be back and for a longer stay and hopefully the road to Dess Waterfall will be open for a wild shower 😂

Lovely place surrounded by fields and forests, great hosts, clean and tidy.

    Disliked:

I cannot say I disliked something, I would only try to improve couple things: fresh water tap it was surrounded with a puddle after more people have used it, and tap was a bit too high and squirting around.
Also, maybe ground would need to be levelled in some places for tents, it was hard to find a spot that was horizontal.
Also, not much to do for young children, the playground needs urgent upgrade.
Shower would be a bonus for longer stays.

Owner helped us to get our tent down08/01/2021

Owner helped us to get our tent down

    Disliked:

Extremely poor facilities. Filthy portaloo, with dirty water in sink and on floor plus half used bar of soap. Not acceptable at any time but certainly not when there is a pandemic. Also provided were a tap for drinking water, barbecue and firepit.
Having just come from a farm campsite with fantastic, clean facilities ( shower, camp kitchen with electric kettle, toaster and microwave, washing machine and dog run) that cost £18 a night the cost of £20 a night is exorbitant!
2 hour check in, which we didn't notice until we arrived. Did not see the A4 sized notice indicating where the campsite was, as this was not obvious when entering the area. Had tried to phone ahead to say we would be late but could not get a signal. By the time we could get some mobile reception there was no reply.
Found somebody at the go carting area who directed us to the wrong place. Fortunately the owner arrived, before we had pitched the tent. She somewhat curtly asked us if we had not seen the notice but did take us to the right place.
The owners did admit that they had just opened up for camping so we're still learning.
This might be great for a stag weekend as there are lots of activities on site however the price of basic camping is far too high given the lack of facilities. Cleaning of the portaloo would only take a few minutes and providing a liquid soap dispenser, instead of a used bar of soap would seem advisable.
Also better, friendly signage at the entrance to the complex and longer check in times. It can be difficult to make a 2 hour check in when you are traveling several hundred miles.

Local attractions

More activity? You got it. Take a gentle stroll from the park along the surrounding woodland trails and down to the Dess Waterfall (15 minutes’ walk) or along to the Peel Ring of Lumphanan (half an hour), where Macbeth took his last stand. Craigievar Castle (15 minutes' drive) also makes a fine place for an amble, taking in the pink castle itself, its collections of art and armour, and a stroll along its wooded paths.

There are more trails to wander along at Glen Tanar Estate (15 minutes), and at the royal family’s holiday home Balmoral Castle (half an hour) – both are also good places to ride bikes or saddle up for horse riding. For something more challenging, take an uphill route at Lochnagar (45 minutes), the area’s tallest munro, or the mountain bike courses at Tarland Trails (15 minutes).

Need a little drink after all the excitement? Lost Loch Spirits is just next door for tours, tastings and spirit school experiences or it’s a half-hour drive to the Royal Lochnagar Distillery for top-notch whisky.
