  • Waterside holiday park on the shores of Lough Ree in County Westmeath
  • Lough Ree Yacht Club 15 minutes’ drive; Hill of Uisneach 25 minutes
  • Family-friendly base for water sports; pub within five minutes’ walk
Keen to get out on the water? Lakeside Lough Ree East Caravan and Camping may be the County Westmeath base for you. Set in five acres of stunning countryside on the shores of Lough Ree East, this family-run park in the sleepy village of Ballykeeran has its own jetty and boat slip. As it’s also bordered by a stretch of the Breensford trout river, this means the site makes a pleasant base for anyone into angling, boating, windsurfing, sailing or canoeing. And on the odd day when the weather’s not playing ball, you can stay busy in the on-site recreation room with a pool table and darts board. Amenities include a shower block with disabled facilities, and electric hook-up across the park. Rustle up something for supper in the basic camper’s kitchen, or spark up a barbecue at your pitch. You can pick up bits for the grill from supermarkets in Athlone (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy a pizza or a pint of the black stuff, there’s a popular pub within five minutes’ walk. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to accompany you on holiday, but must be kept on a lead at all times when at the park. One other thing to note, please: the owners of Lough Ree East Caravan and Camping do not organise any sporting activities or rent out any gear, so you’ll need to bring your own paddleboards, kayaks and so on, or hire from local companies at Lakeside Marina (five minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Beautifully located, well-kept campsite on Lough Ree. Praised for clean facilities, friendly staff, and spacious pitches. Guests loved the peaceful vibe, lake views, and ducks. Local pub nearby, easy water sports access. Showers a bit dated, occasional noise, and a shower fee noted. Mostly relaxing, pleasant stays, with many wanting to return.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked This is a big site with good facilities and good access to the local area. It's obviously popular with the boating and canoeing crowd with easy access to the water. Also....lots of ducks!

Disliked The facilities are a little dated....cleaned and functional but things like having coin operated showers with the coin box on the outside of the shower put me off using them. I couldn't work out how you could insert a new token if your water ran out whilst showering.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Stayed for 1 night at Lough Ree, owner very friendly. The campsite is right by the Lough and once checked in you can pick your own spot. You can fish, swim or even hand feed the ducks. The games room has a pool table and vending machine. Everything was very clean including campers kitchen and toilet/shower block. At the entrance to the left is a pub called The Dog and Duck which is family friendly and serves pizzas. Will definitely be back.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Love how easy going it is, friendly the guy running it is and just generally very accessible and well kept everything thing is

Disliked Could do with a very small play area for kids, like a sand pit or something. Otherwise my kids would just dig up the ground 🤣☺️

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite (large)

Liked We loved this campsite. The sunsets over the lake were breathtakingly beautiful. Water sports are allowed in the lake but the site doesn’t provide the equipment.
The pitches were fully booked while we were there but it didn’t feel overcrowded.
Large pitches with electric hook up if needed. We stayed in our campervan but the tent area looked ideal and had electricity available.
Room with pool table and vending machines behind toilet areas ideal for kids or adults. Campers kitchen available and is equipped with washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave.
There is a pub within 5 minutes walk of the campsite called “the Dog and Duck”. We had drinks here and the atmosphere was welcoming.

Local attractions

Novice sailors can take lessons at Lough Ree Yacht Club (15 minutes’ drive), but if you’d rather leave the steering to someone else, try an evening cruise in The Hot Tub Boat (10 minutes) – spectacular sunsets are almost guaranteed on cloudless days. Not good on the water? Enjoy those sunsets from dry land on the lakeside Lough Ree Park Walking Trail (10 minutes), and take your camera to snap the abundant wild fowl. For a stroll in the footsteps of ancient peoples, pre-book a guided walk around the lofty Hill of Uisneach (25 minutes) – a sacred ceremonial site scattered with monuments from the Neolithic period right through to the Middle Ages. Keen to learn more about times long gone? Visit Dún Na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park (15 minutes) for a family-friendly romp through rural Irish life. As well as painstakingly recreated farmhouses, there’s a blacksmith’s forge, lime kilns and a fisherman’s cottage on display, with historic agricultural machinery in a small museum. Chances are though that the favourite activity for younger visitors will be stroking the furry farmyard animals at the petting zoo.
