Camping pitches for tents

  • Family-friendly camping on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Ballycastle
  • Giant’s Causeway half an hour’s drive; Cushendun Beach 15 minutes
  • Play area and mini golf on a dark skies site with grazing livestock
Here’s the chance to spend quality time outdoors with loved ones, with loads of space to roam and for kids to play. Want to experience rural life on a working hill farm? The folks running the family campsite at Watertop Farm, 10 minutes’ drive from Ballycastle in County Antrim have been welcoming guests for more than 30 years, so they must be doing something right. They’re doing absolutely everything right as it turns out. For starters: fully serviced pitches with hot showers, a play area, monster slide and mini-golf course for kids, and lots of cuddly livestock to befriend, plus safe off-road paths around the farm for campers to explore. Having said that, if you’re looking for party nights, kids’ clubs and TVs in your tent, this site is possibly not your cup of tea... On the other hand, if you’re after spectacular coast and hill views, and traffic-free hiking or biking routes amid forests, waterfalls and mountains, you’re definitely in the right place. As a couple of added bonuses, you’re pretty much guaranteed quiet nights of sound sleep in the peaceful north-coast countryside, and thanks to the lack of light pollution hereabouts, on clear nights you can spot a gazillion stars twinkling up above.

What customers say

This farm campsite offers gorgeous scenery & a peaceful vibe, perfect for families. Guests rave about friendly owners, clean facilities & fun activities like mini-golf, waterfall hikes & animal encounters. While most reviews are glowing, a few note minor issues with shower temps, midges & pitch proximity. Great value for exploring the Antrim coast.

FHU gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Quiet rural location. Good walks with great views.
Plentiful hot water for showers.
Facilities to suit families.

Disliked The toilet and shower blocks were unheated ( it was an unseasonably wintry weekend ) and not completely clean e.g. dust and hair in and around the sink beside the shower, cobwebs in the toilet block) Just needs a little more attention.

FHU gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Very isolated location

Disliked Weather was terrible when we arrived very wet and windy. No one in attendance called mobile number and told to take our pick of pitches, so wandered around in the dark to see what was what.
Pitches, not much more than a bit of concrete and gravel off a muddy farm track, fortunately only a few vans present but overwise it would have been very crowded.
Washroom and amenities dreadful, housed in an old animal shed, they didn’t look like they had been cleaned in a long time. Weather was wet and windy and dank cold shower did not seem inviting.

From the manager: It's difficult to respond to negative reviews when I'm sure miserable weather has skewed your perception of our farm campsite, however for the benefit of others reading:
1. We have an UNMANNED check in area with instructions and contact numbers. This isn't a secret, it's advertised as such on pitchup, so you can get on with your day and arrive whenever you want. We do advise to arrive before dark but it's not a big site to get lost on and everything is signposted. You even read the sign to contact us so the system works...
2. Out of season we have plenty of drop ins, so if you have booked last minute and already paid, it's likely you can also take your pick of pitches. Most people actually like having the choice...
3. The vans are in a row of 7 pitches, hardly crowded! The pitches have grey waste drains, individual drinking water taps and electric sockets. That 'muddy farm track' is a stone gravel track with quite understandable puddles of water (not mud) after hours of torrential rain. Good thing we didn't allocate you a grass pitch in the rain eh.
4. The showers etc are cleaned every day. And then people use them and they get dirty again. So the cycle continues. You are correct however that 2 showers are in a converted farm building (they are quite spacious, and usually clean, unless someone has been in before you and not left it clean...) but the other 2 are in the more modern block literally beside it (but they are a bit tighter on space). All have excellent pressure and HOT water.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location with so much to do. Facilities were great, loved the campers kitchen! Fridge freezer, microwave and toaster. Perfect for us in tents. Can't wait to come back next year and do the waterfall walk. Felt completely safe as a solo camper on my first trip out.

FHU gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Stayed 2 nights at this beautiful working farm, hosted by the lovely Patsy and Pauline. We enjoyed having the camp kitchen and fire in the museum each night. A great place, especially for children with the playgrounds and roaming animals to enjoy. The best hot showers! Some great walks and amazing scenery nearby.
Cannot recommend this place more highly.

Local attractions

Hikers should definitely pack their walking boots; there are a myriad routes close by, ranging from the soaring cliffs at Fair Head (10 minutes’ drive to the car park) to Ronan’s Way along the Glendun River (15 minutes) and the bracing coastal routes in the Causeway Coast National Landscape, taking in the truly spectacular basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway (half an hour). When a day on the beach beckons, Murlough Bay is a secluded shingle expanse ideal for rock pooling, while Cushendun Beach (both 15 minutes) is a wide sweep of soft sand curling round a bay. The site is also about 40 minutes from the famed surfing beaches around Portrush on Antrim’s north coast. Springing to fame as a ‘Game of Thrones’ location, The Dark Hedges (25 minutes) are a twisting, turning avenue of beech trees planted in the 18th century. Equally stunning and mysterious is Loughareema (half an hour’s walk), a ‘vanishing lake’ that fills and empties at random. It can be reached on foot from the site.
