  • Restored gypsy caravans 15 minutes’ drive from Shaftesbury, Wiltshire
  • Salisbury Cathedral half an hour and Stonehenge 40 minutes
  • Adults-only site in a dark skies reserve five minutes’ walk from a pub
Looking for an adults-only West Country camping break? For something that bit different, try Travellers Rest Glamping, five minutes’ drive from Berwick St John in Wiltshire, where accommodation is in authentic 18th-century gypsy caravans. There are stunning views over the downs and ancient woodlands of Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs National Landscape from the pitches, and – even better – you’ll get to meet the gorgeous Percheron heavy horses Romulus and Remus while on site. Each traditionally painted wagon has been sympathetically restored inside and out with original ceiling murals, fixtures and fittings. All come with a bogrács (traditional cauldron) for cooking and a firepit, ideal for evenings spent under the stars as you cook your meals. Not a fan of alfresco cooking? Sample local hospitality at the nearest inn – a mere five minutes’ walk – or try other inns within 10 minutes’ drive. There’s also traditional scrumpy to taste at Cranborne Chase Cider (20 minutes). Practical facilities include eco-friendly hot showers, composting loos and a washing-up station designed with sustainability in mind. The site is also monitored 24/7 for crime prevention and safety. There are walks and bike rides aplenty across Cranborne Chase, which is a certified dark skies reserve, and while you’re out and about, keep an eye open for deer and circling birds of prey.
