  • Cosy eco-friendly shepherd's hut on a Wiltshire working farm
  • Salisbury, Stonehenge and Longleat within a half-hour drive
  • Barbecue, firepit and picnic table provided
Days out rambling on rural footpaths or taking in famed local attractions, swinging home via the village pub and then back to a cosy shepherd’s hut back at base – that may well be the dream for your Wiltshire break. And it's also real life at Marshwood Farm, a petite glamping site on a working sheep/arable farm surrounded by the ancient woods, hills and gorgeous rural views of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The little village of Dinton (home to the pub and a small café) is a mile away and there are plenty of footpaths and cycleways to roam along in the surrounds. Spend your entire break taking in the scenery if you wish, but there’s also a lengthy ticklist of other attractions within easy reach – Salisbury’s 20 minutes away by car, and the site’s also within a half-hour drive of Stonehenge, Shaftesbury, Stourhead and Longleat. Back at the farm, all efforts have been made to keep things eco friendly: lighting and a socket are fed with solar power, and there’s an exclusive-use compost loo just next to the hut. Bring along whatever supplies you want to cook meals on the camp stove or barbecue provided, then cuddle up next to the firepit or get the woodburning stove going for a cosy time in the hut.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked If you’re looking for a ‘working farm’ styled campsite, looks no further than Marshwood Farm.

Set in the rolling farmlands of West Wiltshire, Catherine offers a stay at one of the most clean and tranquil campsites you could possibly find.
From the immaculately cut grass to the well stocked self serve shop, this site offers everything you might possibly fancy when sitting back to relax for a few days.

Take it from me, this is exactly what I was after when looking for the classic ‘back to basics’ campsite.

If I return to the area, I certainly won’t think twice about where to stay!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Excellent site with great facilities ,a big thank you to Catherine who owns the campsite and farm. Catherine went above and beyond, not only did she supply us with a spare tent when one of our groups tent broke, she also took the time to show my son around there working farm where my son had a chance to feed the chickens and collect the eggs.

A very quiet site with great facilities. I will definitely come back here again and maybe try one of there bell tens or shepherds hut.

Thank you for a lovely stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We loved our stay at Marshwood Farm. It is in a really gorgeous dark sky part of the Wiltshire countryside. Pitches are huge so there is a real sense of space and it feels very peaceful. The barn is brilliant - the best facilities we have ever experienced when camping - it felt very luxurious for camping! Lovely spacious shower rooms, and great communal kitchen area with tables inside and out, plus microwave, toaster, freezer, electric hob, crockery and cutlery,
to borrow, and allocated shelf in a fridge. Also a great honesty shop. Catherine the owner has clearly put a lot of thought and care into this campsite. We stayed in our own tent but the bell tents looked great.

Local attractions

Start with a stroll around Salisbury (20 minutes’ drive), looking out for ancient half-timbered buildings and gazing upwards at the cathedral’s spire (famed for being England’s tallest at a whopping 123 metres). A little out of town, ponder how prehistoric people managed to set up Stonehenge (15 minutes) or wander around Wilton House (15 minutes), keeping an eye out for the fab Palladian river bridge as you roam the gardens. There are more gorgeous old buildings to be seen in Shaftesbury (25 minutes), whose cobbled Gold Hill will be familiar to guests of a certain vintage from a well-known bread-based TV advert. Rather grander is the setup at Stourhead (25 minutes), a National Trust estate that sprawls out to 1,000 acres, with all sorts of follies hidden in its midst. If you’ve not had your fill of fancy pads yet, there’s yet another fine mansion at Longleat (half an hour); if that’s enough of that for now, swerve instead to the estate’s safari park to see big cats, elephants and all sorts of other exotic beasts.
