Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Such a fun weekend activity to do with kids. The staff are lovely and there’s such a wide area that you can pitch up so you have your own area. The little one loved that there was a fallen tree to climb on and said he can’t wait to go camping again. We will definitely be coming back again

Liked: Spacious and quiet location. Close to large forest for dog walking and relaxing.

Disliked: Location would benefit from shower facilities and larger toilet block.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The peace and quiet surrounded by woodland. The toilet block, although an older style, was well looked after, very clean and well stocked. It was a pleasant walk into !Marlborough for a pub lunch with plenty of choices. We liked the notices around stating that dogs should always be on a lead, and that it was enforced. The staff were welcoming and well informed, we will definitely be back.

Disliked: There was no shower block but this is well documented on the website.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The site was easy to get to and you could choose to park in the open or under the trees. Walking out of the campsite straight into the Savernake forest was great as we both enjoy walking/ hiking and the walk into Marlborough was easy to ( about half an hour) although it's quite steep and uneven in places. The people running the site were very friendly and helpful and the toilets clean.

Disliked: The only downside as far as I could see was that there were no showers on site.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Best things about Postern Hill Campsite is the relaxed atmosphere and the location. Right on the edge of Savernak forest. Toilets are old but very well maintained as is the whole site. Big bonus is the staff, friendly & helpful.

Disliked: Lack of showers would be an issue for a longer stay but this is made very clear on the website. Shame about the constant rumble of traffic but the site is very close to a major route between Marlborough and Salisbury so to be expected.

Local attractions

Time-travel back to prehistory with the world-famous standing stones at Stonehenge (35 minutes’ drive), and then have a poke around the interactive exhibitions at the smart visitor centre. Quieter but just as impressive are the sprawling neolithic stone circles at Avebury (15 minutes), which you can wander around at leisure. Move forwards to the 19th century with a guided tour of Wilton Windmill (summer only); it has a scenic picnic area with spectacular Wessex Downs views. In Pewsey Vale (both 15 minutes), walk a section of the White Horse Trail and see how many of Wiltshire’s famous chalk horses you can spot. To up the activity levels, Rockstar Climbing Centre (25 minutes) has indoor facilities for novices and experts alike. Marlborough Leisure Centre (five minutes) has an indoor pool and squash courts – both places make great options for the occasional rainy day. And if you’re holidaying with family, a day at Longleat Safari Park (an hour) should keep everyone happy, with drives through lion and tiger enclosures, lake cruises to see the gorillas and sea lion feeding sessions.
