If you want a handy – and exceptionally scenic – base for exploring gorgeous Wiltshire easily, you probably should be heading for Whitehill Camping. At 40 minutes’ drive from upscale Marlborough and its stylish shops, this pop-up site is set on an off-grid organic farm with far-reaching views across Salisbury Plain – and it’s also within easy reach of Stonehenge, Avebury and Salisbury itself. One of the area’s best-known attractions is Caen Hill Locks (20 minutes’ drive), an extraordinary flight of 29 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal. The work of Victorian engineer John Rennie, it’s a scenic place for walking as you can watch narrowboats navigating up and down the locks to a backdrop of far-reaching views across Wiltshire countryside. National Trust - Avebury Manor (25 minutes) is site of one of the largest prehistoric stone circles in the world. Visitors can wander freely among the ancient stones, explore the village and discover thousands of years of history, while Stonehenge (20 minutes) has an informative visitor centre. Sightseeing done and back at home camp, the closest village is West Lavington (20 minutes’ walk), where there are shops, pubs and takeaways. If you’d rather hang out on site, you’ll soon notice an abundance of wildlife, from birds of prey circling overhead to deer and barn owls moving around at dusk.
