  • Peaceful Wiltshire site in the grounds of a 15th-century manor house
  • Bradford-on-Avon five minutes' drive; 20 minutes to Bath or Longleat
  • On the banks of the River Frome; wild swimming and cream teas on site
Ever thought you could feel right at home living on a smart country estate? Well, here’s your chance to give it a try. You won’t be staying in the medieval buildings themselves, but at Stowford Manor Farm you’ll set up in the gorgeous grounds of a 15th-century manor house in the Wiltshire countryside, about three miles from Bradford-on-Avon. And this small-scale site has another excellent feature – it’s right on the banks of the River Frome, with access to the water for fishing, paddling, swimming, paddleboarding and launching small boats. In fact, it’s such a great spot for wild swimming that the Farleigh and District Swimming Club has its base about half a mile downstream – and if you fancy joining them for a dip, you can join up for half price. The campsite itself is a fairly traditional setup, with simple facilities in the form of toilets, showers (extra charge applies) and hot-water washing-up sinks. Dogs and kids are welcome, and you’ll be allowed to set up barbecues and firepits as long as they’re kept off the ground. Logs, barbecue boxes and other goodies can be added to your booking to make life easy (and tasty…) As you might expect from a farm site, you’ll share the space with some animals (get ready to meet some pigs, donkeys and cows while you're here) as well as arable crops. What you may not have expected is that the site also has a lovely little tea room that’s open in the afternoons for cream teas and ice creams, and it also serves up wood-fired pizzas in the evenings (Friday and Saturday nights from May to August, plus other evenings in peak season).

What customers say

Beautiful, tranquil riverside spot with swimming/paddling. Praised for friendly staff, large pitches, and rustic charm (quirky showers, tearooms). Great base for exploring, though road noise mentioned. Basic but clean facilities, some want upgrades. Animals are a hit with families.

Cricket Ground - power optional grass campsite

Liked Lots of room on cricket field, river was nice for a quick dip.

Disliked Toilets and facilities really dirty, looked like they haven't been cleaned in a very long time!
Main field looked very over crowded.
Wouldn't stay again, we booked 2 nights, stayed 1 then moved 30 mins down the road to a much nicer site with much cleaner and better facilities.

Tagglemead - primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Very pleasant and friendly owner and staff. Wonderful location. Quite site.

Disliked Proximity to surprisingly busy road, even at night. The shower/WC and dish washing facilities need a bit of an update in the Tanglewood field.

Tagglemead - primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Really relaxed stay by the river, beautiful setting and friendly atmosphere. Great location as a base to BOA, Bath and Frome. We will most definitely stay again.

Disliked The toilets are very basic and you kinda have to hold your nose and go quickly. Not a problem for us as we expected basic but it’s more festival type facilities rather than camping toilet blocks.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Quirky little site
We found the showers quite sweet as in a converted stable barn with cobbled floor better than some of the sites that we’ve stayed on as you could have a eight minute shower and control the temperature. 50p is no problem.
Lovely little tea room cream teas to die for would recommend sweet little chicken under the table
Safe Swimming and paddling for little ones and four legged friends you’re very clean water and starts off shallow

Disliked Slightly disappointed when we arrived as the site is a bit messy and we booked on pitch up felt the advertisement of the site was a bit overrated. The animals were on the other side of a road busy road
We took our two labradors we could not let them off as no walks and no safe footpaths no park for children to play
We were in the main field we could hear the traffic, but that didn’t really bother us. If you were in the other fields you could see the cars and it is a busy road.
We arrived 15 minutes early than check in at 2pm Don’t think the owners realised that I could hear them complaining very awkward and our pitch was available
Little café is lovely, but again, not child friendly ie milkshakes or cold drinks nothing really for the little ones

Local attractions

If you’d like to explore your immediate surroundings, you need only find one of the footpaths that runs from the site to places like Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Iford Manor Gardens or Westwood Manor. There are riverside walks galore around here too – either along the River Avon or by the Kennet and Avon Canal. A couple of the Avon’s top attractions are in fact its urban spaces – both Bradford-on-Avon (five minutes' drive) and Bath (20 minutes) are well worth visiting for their historic buildings. You may also like to take a trip to Frome (15 minutes). If you’ve brought the kids along on holiday, a trip to the safari park at Longleat (20 minutes) may well be on the cards; if that's a bit too big, consider booking a wolf experience at The Little Zoo (15 minutes) instead. For a more grown-up day out, perhaps you'd like to potter around Prior Park Landscape Garden (20 minutes).
