  • Off-grid Somerset farm campsite with spectacular Bristol Channel views
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 25 minutes to Weston-super-Mare
  • Grass pitches with basic facilities; five minutes’ walk to the pub
A working Somerset farm. Bristol Channel views. Back-to-basics family camping. Sounds like what you’re looking for? Here at Swallow Barn Farm, there's also a traditional country pub (with plenty of outdoor seating for balmy days) a mere five minutes’ stroll away. Grass pitches are spacious, on sloping land and have spectacular views over Somerset countryside to the sea. Basic facilities include a single portable toilet; there is no electricity, however, so remember the torches for late-night wanderings around the site. Barbecues are allowed by the pitches, and you can pick up bits and pieces from the local essentials shop (10 minutes’ walk). A more extensively stocked store and garage is five minutes’ drive away. The site is 10 minutes’ walk from Rowberrow Forest and 15 minutes’ drive from the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for hikes and cycle rides. You are welcome to bring your dogs to join in all the walkies fun, but please keep them under control when on site as there is livestock in adjacent fields.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Lovely views with ample of space. Gentle sloping field. lovely pub just a couple minutes walk down the road.

Disliked The whole area is a catch point for wasps. Sadly not the fault of the campsite itself.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, it is very much appreciated. Sorry you had an issue with wasps, this has never been a problem here before. Hopefully it was an unfortunate anomaly.

Lovely, will return again

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Nice area, views, no one bothers each others pitches.
Tent was left alone when we left the site.
Quite area.
Wild camping so there's no check in, no WiFi, just what you bring.

Disliked Portaloo didn't have water for washing hands unlike last time I went, not an issue as we had wipes just a mention for future campers.

From the manager: Thank you for such a kind review, so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. The Portaloo should have had water so that is something we will keep a check on in future so thank you for bringing that to our attention.

Really nice site in a lovely part of the country.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked A perfect stop over for visiting National Trust’s Tyntesfield House. The views were beautiful, over a pony paddock, which gave a rustic charm that we absolutely love. We had a wonderful nights sleep, it was totally silent. The site is a rolling field on a farm, bring your levelling chocks. There are no shower facilities or electric, which they advertise, only 2 portaloos, which were clean and well equipped with toilet roll and hand washing. The biggest surprise, was having a wonderful country pub within 5 minutes walking distance, which had a full evening menu (sadly we didn’t eat this time!) and offered full cooked breakfast.

Disliked It was perfect for our needs.

From the manager: Thank you for your wonderful review, we really appreciate it. So pleased you loved the peace and quiet, we aim to keep it as rustic as possible. Definitely worth booking a table at the pub next time!

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Got to choose where to pitch, quiet site, lovely views, very close to nice pub and dog walks. Basic facilities but pricing reflects this and suited our short stay needs.

Disliked Portaloos felt cramped, unsure if potential to provide slightly better facilities.

From the manager: Thank you for a good review, the feedback is much appreciated. We are always looking at possibly providing better facilities, but we have to weigh that up against the prices we charge.

Liked Great back to basics campsite. Portaloos were clean. Plenty of space. And what a stunning view. Pub down the road was excellent. Will stay again!

Local attractions

Spectacular landscapes are everywhere in this corner of Somerset, and you can admire the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes’ drive) on foot or by bike. Try the Blackdown Hills AONB (50 minutes) for hikes to the Norman-era Castle Neroche and nearby Iron Age remains (55 minutes), or go hiking, climbing and caving in dramatic Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes) For more subterranean explorations, take the kids on tours of the caverns at Wookey Hole Caves (25 minutes); once back above ground, follow the animatronic dinosaur trail. Need to keep everyone busy? Get out on the dry ski slope at Mendip Activity Centre (five minutes), or join in bouts of archery and games of frisbee golf – if you fancy a round of the real thing, there’s an 18-hole course within 15 minutes’ drive. If the weather’s good, you might consider piling everyone in the car and heading to the popular beach at Weston-super-Mare (25 minutes) for a dip in the Bristol Channel, or Uphill Sands (half an hour) for kitesurfing and sand yachting. The family-friendly beach at Burnham-on-Sea (25 minutes) is the spot for building sandcastles and paddling in shallow waves.
