Our pitch for bank holiday weekend
The farm house
A lovely sunny day

  • Pitch where you like at a back to basics farm site near Wells
  • Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge within a 10-minute drive
  • Pub two minutes' walk away; water supply and toilets on site
Let your troubles ebb away at Ebborways Farm near Wells, in the scenic heart of Somerset. Perfect for those in pursuit of an authentic camping experience, simplicity is the key here: it’s just you, a field – and a campfire if you like – in sumptuous, serene surroundings. Facilities are limited to a water supply and composting loos, and you can pitch wherever you like, alone or in groups. However, you’re not too far from a bit of civilisation: it’s a short walk to a handful of pubs – including a couple that do top-notch food – and a farm shop, in the local village of Priddy (and it is, too). Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs), as well as nets of logs, are available to buy on arrival. Please note that phone signal is very limited here, so you may wish to use the internet for research before you arrive.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked Lovely open space, back to basics. Very friendly. Large fields to camp in. Pitch up where you want, no pitch size. Great place for large groups. Camp fires allowed.

Great apart from the lack of any enforcement of the site rules...

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked What a wonderful camping field, totally idyllic...even had a good pub 10 mins walk from the entrance to the field.

Disliked Motorhomes with loud music. I was totally knac**red from a long day, at about 8pm the drum and base started from motorhomes in the next field. I got up to investigate. The guy in the next tent was totally livid, trying to get his kids to bed....he rang the site phone number at about 10pm, it went straight to answer phone....the drum and base faded at around midnight

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked Basic but lovely clean site. The composting toilets were plentiful, clean, solar lighted and always had paper and sawdust. The staff were friendly and helpful and the free roaming chickens were a wonderful addition. The local pub was a short walk and was reasonably priced and served local cider and lovely food. There were plenty of free to use fire pits and logs available to buy on site.

Disliked There were no showers which we didn’t mind for a short stay but other people may require. WiFi was not available so I used my 5G

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked Good site, laid back with lots of room to stretch out. Local pub had excellent beer & atmosphere & was within a couple of minutes walk from the site (always a bonus in our minds!), plus had a lovely long walk across the surrounding fields/footpaths.

Disliked Only thing to dislike about this site were signs saying ‘sign in here on arrival’ at the house next to the site entrance site, which we tried to do but were ignored. But great service once we drove onto site where we were met by a man who told us everything we needed to know. Pitchup & local site signage contradicted each other so beware if you go to this site.

Local attractions

Given the proximity of Bath and Wells, there’s an obvious temptation to regale your companions with choice one-liners from Blackadder; but pause for breath and you’ll discover that both have more celebrated charms than the baby-eating bishop. Bath probably needs less of an introduction: think Roman baths, Georgian grandeur, Jane Austen, rugby and culture aplenty; while Wells, which holds the accolade of England’s smallest city, is a medieval gem with a thirteenth century cathedral, a moated bishop’s palace, and a lively twice-weekly market. Also highly recommended is a trip to the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, which offers something for all ages: breathtaking views; brilliant caving and rock climbing; walks up Jacob’s Ladder; open-top bus tours; a clutch of family attractions; eerily beautiful stalactite caverns; and, of course, more cheese than you can shake a stick at. Keen walkers will be delighted by the proximity of the Mendips (Ebborways Farm is close to the West Mendip Way, which runs to the Ebbor Gorge nature reserve); or, for those who prefer life on four wheels, there are loads of fascinating places an easy drive away: atmospheric Glastonbury, the colossal caves and family attractions at Wookey Hole, the vibrant maritime city of Bristol, the fantastic safari and adventure park at Longleat, and the sandy beaches of Weston-super-Mare. If you’re visiting in August, you may be lucky enough to coincide with Priddy’s annual sheep fair; this historic event, with animal demonstrations, a funfair and more, attracts a whopping 10,000 visitors each year. Finally, should you feel the need to indulge in our national pastime, there are more than 90 outlet shops at the Clarks Village centre, in the nearby village of Street.
