  • Small Somerset pop-up campsite five minutes’ drive from Langport
  • Avalon Marshes Centre and the Fleet Air Arm Museum 25 minutes’ drive
  • Pitches a short walk from the farm; pubs and shops five minutes’ drive
It’s goodbye madding crowds and hello seclusion when you book a wild camping trip to Wick Dairy Farm, five minutes’ drive from the shops and restaurants of Langport in Somerset. Set on the edge of the Somerset Levels, the pitches are on a small west-facing field about 10 minutes’ stroll away from the farm buildings; access is via a drove (a grassy lane) and across a large field so you’ll need to leave your car parked near the farm and walk in. The pitches are lined by young trees so you can enjoy a bit of privacy and cosy up around your firepit in peace – firewood and kindling can be supplied for an extra fee. The campsite is also something of a wildlife haven, so you may get a glimpse of a variety of local fauna and birds: hares, deer, foxes, bats, barn owls, buzzards, kestrels and swallows (in season) – and occasionally a flock of wild cranes fly overhead from their roosts on the Levels. Please feel free to ask the farmers if you’d like to help feed their sheep – you’ll see the small flock grazing in fields surrounding the pitches. Sometimes there’s farm-produced honey for sale on site, and fresh eggs can often be purchased from the neighbours (that’s breakfast taken care of then). A final note: As this is a pop-up site, facilities are limited to a tap and a compost toilet. There’s no electricity, so don’t forget torches for getting about after dark.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked I had an excellent stay at Wick Dairy Farm and will definitely be back. Having the campsite a 10 minute walk from the main farm buildings makes it feel truly surrounded by nature, and was such a peaceful spot to be in and unwind with the sounds of nature. There was also plenty of space in the field, so you never felt too close to other campers. Farmer Tim was very helpful with local recommendations including pubs, restaurants and going swimming/paddle boarding in Langport, and I was grateful for the help transporting our camping gear to the site. The compost toilet was kept very clean and well stocked, and helpfully had a light inside! There was also plenty of space to park cars on the farm.

Disliked I wish I could've stayed longer!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We were welcomed by friendly farmer Tim who was happy to reply to all our questions and helped us to settle in. We were camping in the field for two nights, which was just great. This is a nature lovers paradise with a lot of wild life around you. Both evenings we saw the storks flying above us and the sunset is just stunning. The farm feels like a rural country escape although Langport Town is just 5min drive away. We spent a day walking around market in the town, walk along the river and an afternoon swim, we absolutely loved it. We recommend the site for anyone who wants to be close to nature.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The hosts Tim and Dawn were warm and helpful. The site was a 10 min walk from the parking and Tim help transport our things with his truck which was very helpful. The campsite was quite and beautiful, the views at the campsite were amazing. It was great to be on the farm, the sheep were so cute and the rolling feilds was a great view to wake up to. Couldn't recommend more.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked I have camped on this site a couple of times once on my own this time with family. Each time, it has been the feeling of peace and a slowing down that has been my first impression. There is so much wild life to see, deer, shallows, foxes and the morning and evening pass over by a flock of cranes. The dragon flies, damsel flies and lots if different butterflies are beautiful. The little ones enjoyed seeing Tim and his sheep. I could sit and watch the sheep for hours. F you are fortunate enough i recommend buying a jar of their honey if they have any. It's a very short drive to Langport where we enjoyed paddle boarding and swimming in the river.
I would recommend camping by the hedge on the right as you enter the field. It gives a bit of shade if it's sunny
It is a working farm so children would need supervision.
I will definitely be visiting again. 😊

Local attractions

Listen up cyclists, because Route 339 of the National Cycle Network runs right in front of the farm on its way from Bridgwater (55 minutes by bike) to join the South Somerset Cycleway (half an hour), a hedge-lined network of rural lanes leading to pretty market towns like Castle Cary (90 minutes) and Sherborne (two hours). There are no end of hiking trails around the Somerset Levels wetlands (five minutes’ drive); follow the River Parrett Trail along the water’s edge to the photogenic ruins of Benedictine Muchelney Abbey (an hour’s stroll) or walk peaty landscapes and woodlands teeming with wading birds from Avalon Marshes Centre (25 minutes’ drive). If you fancy getting out on the water, go paddleboarding or kayaking along the Parrett from the slipway at Huish Bridge (10 minutes). Mix a bit of culture into your holiday itinerary with a visit to the 16th-century mansion at National Trust - Montacute House (half an hour), home to a priceless collection of ornate Flemish tapestries – although the kids might prefer to climb aboard the Concorde or sit on the flight decks of fighter planes and helicopters at the Fleet Air Arm Museum (25 minutes).
