  • Traditionally designed gypsy caravan in a Somerset cider apple orchard
  • Cheddar Gorge 40 minutes’ drive; Glastonbury 15 minutes
  • Peaceful exclusive-use pitch with the kitchen in a vintage caravan
If you always fancied taking a break in a gypsy caravan, here’s your chance to head for Somerset and do just that at Gypsy Caravan Breaks. Hidden away in a peaceful cider apple orchard overlooking the Somerset Levels is The Famous Five, a traditional bow-top gypsy caravan – and an extremely special one at that, for it was once used in a TV adaptation of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five adventure stories. Here you can plan a romantic break for two, or alternatively create your own family adventure. With a flamboyantly painted facade (and heating if required), The Famous Five sleeps two in a cosy double bed with room for a young child as well. Extra guests can sleep nearby in Willow the vintage caravan, and there’s space on this orchard pitch for more tents by arrangement with the owners. Depending on the vagaries of the British weather, cooking can be done over a campfire or in Willow's kitchen, which also has a fridge for that all-important chilled wine, while the business of showering and washing (with constant hot water) is taken care of in the neighbouring shepherd’s hut. As the entire site is designed with minimal carbon impact in mind, toilet facilities consist of an environmentally friendly composting loo. Should you feel compelled to leave this peaceful spot (many guests simply choose to chill around the campfire), there’s a pub within five minutes’ drive, where you can source a decent pint of Somerset cider and an excellent Sunday roast.

Local attractions

Active guests can get out into the fresh air by climbing and abseiling the steep sides of Cheddar Gorge, or hit the walking and cycling trails of the Blackdown Hills (both 40 minutes’ drive) and the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (50 minutes). There are gentler ambles for all the family on the Somerset Levels (10 minutes), a couple of golf courses within 25 minutes’ drive, and a riding school about the same distance away. When the weather’s fine, cart the kids off to whizz down slides at the outdoor Greenbank Swimming Pool (10 minutes), and dodge any rainy days with a tour of the underground caverns at Wookey Hole (half an hour). If you fancy an adults-only treat, make time for a trip around the discount stores of Clarks Village (10 minutes). Investigate Somerset’s mysterious past with a clamber up to the chapel on Glastonbury Tor and visit the photogenic ruins of the town’s abbey (both 15 minutes), or tour the landmark cathedral and bishops’ palace in Wells (25 minutes), one of the smallest – and prettiest – cities in England.
