  • Adults-only Somerset touring site five minutes’ drive from the M5
  • Cheddar Gorge 25 minutes’ drive and Glastonbury half an hour
  • Stabling and hacking available on site; pubs five minutes’ drive
Bag some adults-only time for walking, cycling and horse riding when you book a stay at Ladymead Farm, 10 minutes’ drive from Highbridge in Somerset. With just a few level grass touring pitches, this small site offers facilities including a loo block, washing-up sink and picnic tables for alfresco dining; it’s also very accessible as it’s only five minutes’ drive from Junction 22 of the M5. The site also has modern equestrian facilities and stabling if you’d like to include your own horse on your Somerset sojourn; there’s miles of rural riding right from the paddocks and gorgeous sandy beaches like Berrow (15 minutes’ drive) and Brean (20 minutes) to gallop along. You can hack up to Crook Peak (20 minutes) for glorious views over Somerset, or across Wavering Down (15 minutes), and there are also a couple of equestrian centres within 15 minutes’ drive. You don’t have to be horse-mad to lay your head at Ladymead Farm, however. There are loads of quiet local cycling and walking routes hereabouts, as well as non-horsey beaches like Burnham-on-Sea (10 minutes) for dips in the Bristol Channel. Rich’s Cider Farm (10 minutes) is open for tours and tastings, and there are a couple of pubs to check out in the local village of Mark (five minutes).

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked So close to the M5, yet very peaceful and calm. I was the only person there so that was great! Some horse paddocks nearby which I always like. The place was easy to find and access. The host, Graham, was very helpful, especially as this was my first outing in the motorhome. The site was only created recently and when everything is set up, eg shower, I think this is going to be a gem

Disliked No hot water yet, or wi-fi but this is planned imminently

Local attractions

Grab your walking boots and head off into the Mendip Hills National Landscape (20 minutes’ drive) or go hiking on the salt marshes at Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve (40 minutes). Take the binoculars to search for birds of prey, kingfishers and snipe at RSPB Greylake (25 minutes), or up the activity ante by cycling the Strawberry Line (20 minutes), and climbing or caving at Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes). You have a brace of historic towns to explore. Glastonbury has an atmospheric abbey and plenty of unusual shops selling crystals and books on witchcraft, while in gorgeous Wells (both half an hour), you can explore the Gothic cathedral covered in gargoyles and the medieval Bishop’s Palace, where there are fine gardens to stroll as well. If shopping is on your schedule, take advantage of the designer bargains at Clarks Village (25 minutes), or make a day of it and head for the malls and department stores of Bristol (50 minutes).
