  • Cosy single shepherd's hut in a private garden in Exmoor National Park
  • A short walk to Wimbleball Lake; Exmoor Pony Centre 25 minutes' drive
  • Barbecue, games and woodburner included; animals to meet on site
What a cute and cosy little retreat for a quiet Somerset break – Foxgloves is a lovely little shepherd’s hut built by her owners and now installed in a gorgeous spot in Exmoor National Park, very close to the banks of Wimbleball Lake. With just a single hut set in a private garden, there’s plenty of peace and privacy for guests here – although you won’t be alone, as the resident goats, sheep, pigs and dogs are always on hand in neighbouring fields to say hello (especially if you’ve brought treats). There are also chickens on site, so you can expect fresh eggs for your breakfast if you want them. All sorts of things have been thought of here to make your break go with a swing – as well as housing the beds, the hut has a couple of armchairs, a dresser holding books, a radio and giant marshmallows, and a trunk full of games and blankets for cooler evenings. Underfloor heating and a woodburning stove help to keep things nice and toasty inside too. Outside, you can cook on the barbecue and get those marshmallows toasting on the firepit (with firewood provided). For more conventional cooking, there’s a private kitchen just a few steps away (with a hob, oven, fridge, kettle and all the crockery and pans you should require). Also close by is your private bathroom, with a toilet and spacious shower. Nearby Dulverton (15 minutes’ drive) is a handy source of shops, cafés and a top-notch chip shop; there’s also an excellent village shop closer to home. Site owner Christine knows the area really well and is happy to give tips on places to eat and things to do.

Local attractions

Wimbleball Lake (15 minutes’ walk) is a wonderful thing to have so close by – you can get out onto walking/bike trails along the shore, take the kids to the adventure playground or book in for activities including fishing, sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding. And if all that sounds a little too active, perhaps just take a stroll to view the dam, an engineering marvel that can be seen about 10 minutes away. Exmoor National Park has heaps more things to keep you busy while you’re here – perhaps you’d like to climb Haddon Hill (15 minutes’ drive), visit the Exmoor Pony Centre (25 minutes) or saddle up for a horseback outing with Pine Lodge Riding (25 minutes). Top walking spots include Dunkery Beacon (20 minutes) and Tarr Steps (half an hour). For family days out, look at places like Devon Railway Centre and Diggerland Devon (both 45 minutes) or head to the sandy beach in Minehead (35 minutes). On a grownup holiday? Stroll around National Trust - Knightshayes Court (35 minutes) or tour Wellhayes Vineyard (25 minutes).
