The Rodney Stoke Caravan and Camping Park: Mixed pitches – a bit of grass and a bit of gravel

General

  • Small and friendly pub site under three miles from Cheddar
  • Extensive range of home-cooked food including veggie and gluten-free
  • On the bus route to Cheddar and Wells

If friendly pubs, small sites and a peaceful kid-free vibe are the things that have you stoked on holiday, you'll like The Rodney Stoke Caravan and Camping Park, a small and friendly site behind the Rodney Stoke Inn near Cheddar and Wells.

And if you like to have heaps of choice for your dinner dishes, this is also the place for you: the pub serves a proper mix of food from an extensive a la carte menu. For doing your own dinner, barbecues and self-contained firepits are allowed on site.

It's not far from Cheddar and Wells; if you fancy having a pint in either, leave the car at base and take the bus running to both that leaves close by.

After pints and plates of food it's pleasing to hear that there's a handy bathroom block out by the pitches, upgraded for the 2020 season with toilets and showers.

The Rodney Stoke welcomes dogs as long as they're well-behaved, but no humans under 16, please.

Please note

Guests under the age of 16 are not allowed on site.

A charge of £0.50 ($0.70) applies for the use of the shower.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

Please specify the sort of pitch you require (tent, caravan or motorhome) when booking.

Coronavirus update: the pub is not open on Mondays. Opening hours on other days are 12-2.30pm and 6pm-8.30pm.

Small, quiet site with good washing facilities (remember to get your shower tokens from reception). Close to pub/restaurant Secured at night. Manager is friendly and very helpful.

Easy access to many local attractions (we went down for the Weston Beach Race)

    Disliked:

Not much, there is very little by way of lighting on the site and even less on the village roads which lack footways. But that's actually as much a plus as anything - the view of the night sky is awesome

From the manager...

Thanks Mike, glad you both enjoyed your stay. Cheers Tom 😎😎😉😊

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments, glad you enjoyed your stay. Sorry about the soggy grass but that is what happens when you have rain. Most people who come here are happy we don't have WIFI they say they come here to get away from all that, I agree with them. All The Best. Tom 😊😊😎😎

We were given a list of site rules but no information regarding facilities, although it was a small site so not too difficult to work things out

From the manager...

Hi Kathryn, thank you both. There is a good pamphlet you can find online regarding Camping for first timers, as most sites like this have a similar set-up. The rules have to be handed out because unfortunately there are people who need a bit of guidance. Cheers Tom 😎😎😎😊

Directions

The site is at the bottom of the car park for the Rodney Stoke Inn. Customers with caravans and motorhomes are advised not to let a satnav direct you down New Road (which leads from the gliding club to the bottom of Draycott village), as this road is dangerous for large vehicles and towed units and it is likely to cause damage to your vehicle. Instead it is better to approach on the main road from either Axbridge or Wells.

Local attractions

Smashing Cheddar and its gorge, caves, cheese and ciders is less than three miles away and easy to get to by car; the Wookey Hole Caves are about three and a half miles in the other direction.

Caving and rock climbing are both available – and mighty popular – in the vicinity as well, as is golfing at the Isle of Wedmore and Mendip Springs golf clubs (crazy golf is at Cheddar too).

Also popular nearby is the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, around 14 miles away: have a day here around the town museum, Helicopter Museum, aquarium and Grand Pier, or to take a paddle steamer on a day trip along the Severn Estuary or Bristol Channel.

Within 30 miles, history and city fans can get to the old areas of Bristol and Taunton as well as historic and lovely Bath for its spas, Roman remains, Jane Austen connections and well-regarded festivals.

Must see

  • Cheddar Caves & Gorge (2.5 miles)
  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (3.3 miles)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (4.2 miles)

National Trust

  • King John's Hunting Lodge (4.3 miles)
  • West Pennard Court Barn (9.0 miles)
