  • Spacious Somerset safari tents at a family-run organic working farm
  • In the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near Chard
  • Comfy beds, woodburner, kitchen and private bathroom for each tent
A holiday that’s peaceful and yet luxurious – and it’s kind to the environment too? It's a win-win-win situation at Feather Down Farms - Wambrook Farm, a glamping site in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty about five minutes’ drive from Chard. The smart and spacious safari tents here have been set up in the meadow of a Somerset farm, where Ed, Elena and their family run a mixed farm that has wheat and barley crops as well as sheep and Aberdeen Angus cattle. It’s all managed on organic and sustainable principles, and you’ll spot various eco-friendly additions around the place, including a solar farm and a biomass heating system. The team here are very happy to show you around and answer any questions about farming life. Being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has several benefits, including some gorgeous views from the tents and lots of places to get out for a scenic walk nearby. And this location is a particularly fine one as it’s also not far from the coast or a whole lot of family attractions including Crealy Theme Park and the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum. (Handily, there’s also an excellent gastropub about 20 minutes’ walk away…) Having Chard close by is a real bonus too, as you’ll be able to head out easily for a meal in one of its restaurants or pick up supplies at the market or shops before heading back to cook in your fully equipped kitchen. Other top-notch touches in your tent include a private bathroom, comfy beds (with bed linen provided) and a woodburning stove to keep you all cosy (with a bag of firewood supplied).

Local attractions

Stay here and you’ll be close to the border of Somerset and Dorset – and that means plenty of things to fill your days with. An easy place to start with is of course the area just around the farm, which has lots of pretty villages to explore and trails to follow. A trip to the coast is a fine idea too – it will only take you about half an hour to drive to Lyme Regis for a fishing trip or some time on the beach, or 40 minutes to West Bay to marvel at the huge golden cliffs. Sidmouth (45 minutes) is another great option, especially if you’d like to stop at The Donkey Sanctuary (35 minutes) en route. For other days out, have a look at Forde Abbey House & Gardens (15 minutes’ drive), explore a huge collection of aircraft at Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum (35 minutes) or hit the rides for an action-packed day at Crealy Theme Park (40 minutes).
