Hay meadow

  • A nearly wild campsite in the heart of The Blackmore Vale in Dorset
  • Jurassic Coast's Weymouth and Osmington beaches 40 minutes' drive away
  • Shared fridge-freezer and campfires on base; 20 minutes to Sherborne
Make hay while the sun shines at Little Rodmore Camping, a pop-up nearly-wild site in nine acres’ worth of grassy meadows and open only in summertime. Guests are surrounded by several scenic fields while at this family farm – in short, it’s just the ticket for satisfyingly simple stays. With no electric hook-ups, it’s also a basic base for dawdling around Dorset’s northern reaches, and the lack of artificial lighting means the stars tend to be impressively bright after dusk. Cuddle up around the campfire with your fellow guests while staring skyward before keeping a keen eye out for the local deer, birds, butterflies and small mammals once the sun rises the next morning. More interested in hunting for fossils than gazing at country-dwelling creatures? Make your way to the Jurassic Coast beaches of Weymouth, Osmington and Ringstead Bay (all 40 minutes’ drive) and scurry around in search of extinct ammonites and belemnites instead. Facilities back at the park have been kept to the basics but include compost toilets, a single porta-shower, a shared fridge-freezer, a hot water hand-washing station and a cold-water washing-up area. Depending on demand, the site sometimes cooks up takeaway light bites for breakfast and dinner as well as Dorset cream teas (check in advance).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Peaceful, quiet field on a farm. This campsite was a great base for us while we spent a weekend exploring the local area with a day trip to beautiful Shaftesbury on Saturday. We had a lovely fire both nights. Walked to the Green Man pub on our first evening, and cooked on the fire our second second evening. Clear starry nights. Compost toilets and fridge both good to have and clean. Field was fairly dry despite all the rain leading up to our trip. Affordable site that we would definitely visit again. Nicki was very responsive and helpful.

Primitive grass campervan campsite (maximum 6 metres)

Liked Facilities were basic but in excellent condition, location was wonderfully quiet with great walks in the area, although Dorset Councils signing could be improved. The most spacious site we have been to, will certainly return.

Primitive grass campervan campsite (maximum 6 metres)

Liked We had such a lovely weekend at this site. The weather wasn’t great but that didn’t matter as the surroundings made up for it. The facilities were excellent and although we never got to meet the owners, it was evident that this site means a lot to them and is well taken care of. You are in a very quiet location with not much around but this is just how we wanted it. We will definitely return!

Disliked Nothing to complain about!

From the manager: Thank you so much for your review and you are right the site does mean a lot to us!. We are a small organic farm and we are a pop up site. We feel very lucky to live here and are pleased to share it. Glad you enjoyed your stay despite the weather! Sorry my husband didn't meet up with you as he does try to speck to all our campers. I do too but am just recovering from an op for a new knee.
We look forward to welcoming you back and we will make sure we meet you next time!

Local attractions

Once you’ve ticked off the beaches of Weymouth, Osmington and Ringstead Bay (40 minutes’ drive), set off a little further towards other famed stretches of Dorset coast, including the beaches of Durdle Door, Man 'O' War and Lulworth Cove (all 50 minutes). Or perhaps you’d like to stick to scenery closer by? If so, shuffle around Sherborne’s old castle, gardens, abbey and museum, then venture a bit farther to take a look round more establishments filled with curios, namely Dorchester’s Dorset County Museum, Tutankhamun Exhibition, Teddy Bear Museum and Dinosaur Museum (25 minutes). If you like your activities to be a little more interactive, meander around the Monkey World rescue centre (20 minutes) and the maze in Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (40 minutes). More creatures – from the underwater world, this time – can be spotted at the SEA LIFE Centre Weymouth (25 miles), not too far from the impressive sand sculptures at Sandworld. Another offbeat spot to stick on the itinerary is Abbotsbury Swannery (40 minutes), the only place in the world where you can wander amid a colony of 600 mute swans. The flock lives on the grounds of an 11th-century monastery, close to the 18th-century Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens gorgeous magnolia and camellia displays.
