  • Spacious 10-acre campsite in the small Dorset village of Burton
  • Christchurch Harbour and Avon beach 10 minutes' drive away
  • Within walking distance of a pub; South West Coast Path 10 miles away
Whether you’re exploring down the local footpaths that crisscross the countryside or tracking down ponies and canoeing ventures in the New Forest National Park, a stay at Summers Camp will help you tune into your adventurous side. This spacious site is spread over 10 acres of Dorset countryside, with many corners left over to nature. That means you can expect to see wildflowers and birds around the place and find lots of opportunities to get out and explore more. This pop-up site is in the small village of Burton, a 10-minute drive from England’s south coast and the New Forest National Park. Summers Camp is an off-grid site so you should get dark skies at night, but LED fairy lights create laidback festival-style vibes (as well as making a great backdrop for your holiday selfies). Acoustic entertainment is also occasionally on the agenda. It’s safe to say that this friendly site also has good amenities including hot showers, toilets and an occasional pop-up bar. As for the location, well, things are indeed convenient. The site is under a mile from two pubs, a post office and a convenience store, and there’s a pick-your-own farm shop and bakery five minutes’ drive away. Nearby seaside spots like Avon beach and Highcliffe Castle can be reached in about 10 minutes, while the stunning South West Coast Path starts about 10 miles west in Poole (30 minutes’ drive).

Primitive grass and earth RV campsite

Liked How close it was to the pub
The oak inn down the road is excellent.
Quiet at night

Disliked Not enough toilets, and apparently in a right state, we didn't use the showers or toilets as were self contained but heard bad opinions from others.

Primitive grass and earth RV campsite

Liked The location, a short walk from an excellent pub (The Oak), and a bus route to Christchurch and Bournemouth. The size of the site.

Disliked The Portaloos were a bit grim! Not a fault of the site owner, moreover a problem caused by inconsiderate humans and the intense heat.

Bell tent (six person, basic)

Liked Loved our bell tent blank canvas to make as luxury as you want with own kit. No tent move in and get on with your trip. So much bigger than our own tent. Fab location to drive 10 minutes to 5 different stunning beaches. Supermarkets we found sainsburies, lidl and waitrose in 10 min drive. Local pub in walking distance.

Disliked Potaloos never a big draw but they were clean. Showers were ok could have been better with drainage around them. On bone dry day in August had to walk threw about 3m wet soggy ground to get in and out of them.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked This was my first time camping as a solo female with my three children, and I honestly could not fault it. From start to finish, it was a wonderful experience.

Paul, the camping warden, was fantastic! He greeted us on arrival with a warm welcome, made sure we had all the information we needed, and went out of his way to make us feel safe and comfortable. For our very first rural camping experience, his friendly and approachable nature made such a difference. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and he was on hand to answer any questions!

The site itself was immaculate – toilets and showers were spotless, handwashing and washing-up facilities were excellent, and the whole campsite was beautifully maintained. My children had an amazing time exploring and enjoying the outdoors, and we all left with happy memories.

Thank you, Summers Campsite, for giving us the perfect first camping experience, and thank you, Paul, for being such an outstanding camping warden!

It’s a definite 10/10 from us, and we hope to return again this summer with friends.

Local attractions

In the New Forest National Park (10 minutes’ drive), there are plenty of activities to chuck yourself into… canoeing, archery, hiking or cycling perhaps? Visiting the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum (10 minutes), the National Motor Museum (35 minutes) or New Forest Wildlife Park (35 minutes)? Those of you who are keen on all the adventurous sort of stuff will spend your time wisely at Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre (15 minutes), which runs skiing, snowboarding and ringo rides. Moors Valley Country Park (20 minutes) is just as sporty a day out, as the park has trails, a golf course and Go Ape ropes courses for those who want to channel their best monkey impression. Back towards the coast, a picnic in the grounds of Highcliffe Castle (10 minutes) could be followed by a stroll down to the beach. You may want to see how you fare with watersports like paddleboarding from Christchurch Harbour (10 minutes). Otherwise, join the sailing scene in Lymington (25 minutes) for another seaside-inspired day.
