General

  • Bell tent stays in a field next to the Swanage steam railway tracks
  • Set in the village of Harmans Cross a 10-minute train ride to Swanage
  • Campfires and dogs allowed; three nature reserves within a short drive

Trainspotter? Or got a thing for vintage transportation? Then stay in a bell tent next to the Swanage railway tracks in the village of Harmans Cross on your next trip away… Railway Campsite is set up so you can see the steam engine pass by from the grounds.

While waiting for the train to chug along, light up the campfire – blazes are allowed at this park – to stay warm, or bring out the blankets included in the bell tent. Your accommodation will also have mats, lamps and beds as well as a picnic table outside so eats can be had alfresco. Portaloos and a shower are on site and are shared.

If you're thinking of riding the railway, Harmans Cross station is a couple of minutes’ walk away, meaning you can ditch the car and take the train to Swanage about 10 minutes away, for ambles along the 19th-century pier then strolls on the wide sandy beach.

Back in Harmans Cross – where you can pick up provisions for lunch from the small village shop – Railway Campsite is sandwiched between three south Dorset nature reserves, so chances to hike are all around. The Purbeck Hills, an area extending from lovely Lulworth Cove (half an hour’s drive west of the park) to the white coastal cliffs of Old Harry Rocks 20 minutes to the east, are 15 minutes’ drive away for walks in the chalky downs.

Lovely family friendly site in a beautiful location.08/30/2019

The campsite is in a lovely location.
We were texted that morning to check our arrival time and on arrival was greeted by the host. He was extremely friendly and took time to explain where everything was and suggested places locally to visit.

The site is very basic but this was as advertised when we booked and what we expected when booking.
The bell tent was very spacious, and the beds were very comfortable, we slept extremely well. The light inside the tent worked very well and we loved the fairy lights outside . An added bonus inside was being left a spare toilet roll and bin bag left in the tent.

The portal Loos were very clean and the bell tent shower worked well and would be adequate for a few nights stay. There was taps providing constant drinking water meaning we could refill our water bottles which was helpful on a hot summers day.

The highlight of this site was definitely the fact you could have your very own campfire this kept us warm so we could enjoy the evening outside and our children loved tasting marshmallows.
Also with the steam train trundling past every so often at the bottom of the site as a added treat.

A thoroughly enjoyable stay and we would happily stay here again.

    Disliked:

The fact we had only booked to stay for the one night.

    The weather

    Disliked:

Where do I start - this site is a joke. We booked for a short and low key glamping break with our young kids. All photos on the website/pitchup are of 5-10 bell tents - no other tents/caravans/camper vans on site. When we arrived it looked like Glastonbury. Loads and loads of tents/camper vans/caravans. So not at all what we were expecting but ok - the weather is good, it’s a bank holiday, let’s just get on with it. However, with just 4 portaloo toilets to service well over 200 people, it was absolutely disgusting very quickly. There is no hot water to wash up or wash your hands. The shower consists of a bell tent (which doesn’t shut) with a pipe in it - and even that was broken on the second day we were here. The noise levels from the campers behind us was horrific - they were up til 3am with music blaring, shouting and screaming. The owner didn’t want to help/couldn’t see an issue with that and told us to sort it out ourselves. We barely got any sleep. I think it’s utterly outrageous that this site was advertised as a handful of bell tents and then was packed to the rafters with other tents and camper vans, with no restriction on noise levels at all. If you want a short quiet “glamping” break then do NOT head here.

Location was ok. Quite close to swanage.

    Disliked:

These are not just bell tents on their own! There were lots of other campers on the field. There was a big group of adults behind our bell tent who were up playing music and shouting until 1am. There might be times when it is just the bell tents but our experience was not family friendly. When we complained to the person who owns the bell tents the response was that he has no control over who else uses the field. He said " I have no control over the rest of the world and it's contents" I don't mind back to basics camping but this was not a peaceful setting.

The campsite is in a lovely location and the added bonus of being by a steam train and the train station is very atmospheric!

    Disliked:

This is marketed as a basics campsite which I appreciate. However nowhere in the description does it say that the “toilets” are just portaloos dotted around at inconvenient angles with no lights at night time, which have been baking in the sun all day! So in other words it doesn’t have a toilet block. There is only 1 shower which is in a bell tent where the door doesn’t close so people can walk in at any time. It was well presented in there with a nice mirror and even shampoo and conditioner but it’s basically a shower head left on the floor inside a shower tent, in wide a bell tent which doesn’t close. oh and of course we were promised hot water and there wasn’t any! This is poor. Apparently it was “broken” with no signs of anyone trying to fix it. At least a sign saying “don’t take all your clothes off, stand under the shower head and expect hot water, there isn’t any!” Would have been nice.

From the manager...

Thank you.
Talking is better than texting. As i was 15ft away from you.
The shower is not broken.
You did not turn the gas on...
Clear instructions that everyone else managed to have a shower.
Portaloos are stated in the description. Please read.
Being a basic/pop up campsite you cannot build shower blocks.
I helped you from the moment you arrived....
And yet as many people now, they cannot simply ask a question or talk face to face like an adult should do.
Instead leave incorrect reviews through your on lack of communicative skill...
Ie. Email/text message.
Ps,,,what angle would you like a portaloo at?? Its a field.
Anyway.
Thank you for your stay.
Jon.

What a warm friendly welcome! Loved the spacious bell tent & the air beds were far more comfortable than anticipated. The porta loo's were clean & well stocked & a spare loo roll was left in the tent, thank you! The separate bell tent shower was genius, loved the full length mirror. There was a picnic table next to the tent which was really useful & we successfully managed to light a camp fire. The site is peaceful with beautiful views & an added bonus of the steam train chugging past the field. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & look forward to returning. 🤗

Loved the relax feel to the site, very back to basics! Perfect position for the railway, Swanage and corfe! Had so much fun waving to the passing trains too! Lovely clean bell tent and plenty of space around with picnic table and fire pit x we will definitely return x

    Disliked:

Toilet facilities are perfectly fine, there is a lack of shower facilities and no hot water, which is all fine for one nights stay, any longer and I think we may have struggled x

From the manager...

Shower facilities were damaged last weekend in the terrible high winds.
Now up and running again today. Apologies....
