Wild swimming in the Frome river
Space to relax in the five-acre meadow
The frome river runs by the site
Wildflowers by the stream

  • Peaceful site on a dairy farm 15 minutes' walk from Moreton
  • 10 minutes' drive from Monkey World; 20 minutes from Jurassic coast
  • On the banks of the Frome river for picnics and wild swimming
Consider for a moment your ideal country break: might it just feature stargazing, campfire building and a spot of wild swimming? If that’s a nod of agreement, have them all with a foray to Frome Meadow Campsite, a peaceful place on a dairy farm 15 minutes’ walk from Moreton. There are five acres of fab open space here to play with, and the place is surrounded by heath and woodland, with miles of bridleways to wander along. Back at base, the Frome river runs past the site for paddling or plunges on a hot day; its banks also have plenty of spots in which to lay out a picnic or pop open a bottle of wine. And might that ideal break also involve a certain amount of mod cons to up the comfort level? Then you’ll be chuffed to hear that your rural retreat has been kitted out with eco loos, hot showers and a washing-up area, and you can purchase wood for your campfires or firepits. So, pretty much complete seclusion then? Not quite – in fact, add a tick to that ideal break box for easy access to lots of attractions. Monkey World and the Tank Museum are both about 10 minutes away by car, and you’re about a 20-minute drive from the beaches and fossil hunts of the Jurassic Coast.

What customers say

This eco-friendly site offers a peaceful, nature-focused experience with plenty of space and friendly guests. River access for swimming and play was a highlight, as were the clean facilities. While many loved the rural setting & proximity to local spots like Moreton, some found the facilities basic, with inconsistent shower temps & signage issues.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Amazing location next to a beautiful river, really enjoyed floating down in the rubber inner tubes.

Great facilities, eco friendly and enjoyable

Disliked Struggled to check in and out, the phone number provided didn’t answer and the shop was only manned for 1 hour. No reply to my email either.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We stayed only for 1 night but wished it could have been longer. The location next to the river was ideal especially for the children. It was good to see a campsite also where an early check in was offered. If your going for just 1 night having a restricted check in time after 12 Isn't great, especially if you want to make the most of your stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great location, spacious and lovely little river for kids to play in with rubber rings provided.

Disliked Nothing to dislike, the toilets are strange if you’ve never used before as it’s a composting toilet but this is mentioned in the advert. I wish it was open for more than 1 month a year 😞

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The choice to pitch up wherever you wanted on the fields.
The compost toilets and showers were clean, cleaner than some brick blocks we've used in fact.
Washing up area available too.
A little shop opened up between 5 and 6 where you can hire a fire pit or purchase coal, wood, honey, biscuits.
You can use your own firepit if you have that too.
Quite site, people settled down around 10pm but no strict rules you can still sit around your fire as long as you want.
The highlight for us though was the river/stream, just perfect. Shallow areas for paddling only but deep enough either end of you want a small wild swim. A few tubes available as well by the side of the river if you want to float down.
Loved the site and definitely returning next year!

Disliked Nothing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A great little site in very rural Dorset next to the gorgeous River Frome... one of England's finest rare chalk streams.
Great little showers... hot... and a hot water washing up area too.
Plenty of space... camp wherever takes your fancy... no need to feel squashed in.
I travelled alone but clearly kids of all ages were enjoying the space to play in the fields & river in the hot weather we had.
Very peaceful and very dark at night... great to sit & chill with a fire... available in the little onsite shop... and watch the stars & listen to the owls & foxes in the woods behind.

Disliked Nothing that I didn't like... I'm more than happy in a basic campsite... but you need to be aware that the toilets are of the long drop composting variety... fine with me, but not everyone's cup of tea...
There's no WiFi but that's to be expected in the middle of a field in rural Dorset... mobile signal is fine though (unfortunately 😂😂)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked It was a very pleasant campsite, with lots of space and friendly guests.

Disliked The pilot light kept blowing out in the shower, which made having warm water a challenge.

Local attractions

Feet have been passing this way for many a millennium, and the Jurassic Coast is still a good place to find bits of ancient beast. Kimmeridge, 25 minutes away, is your best bet for local fossil hunts, and the Museum of Jurassic Marine Life is fab for finding out what life looked like back then. If you fancy a break from the dino detective work, there’s plenty more along this stretch of coast – perhaps head to Lulworth Cove to kayak around the huge stone arch at Durdle Door, or wend your way to Weymouth for three miles of sandy beach backed up by lots of traditional seaside ents including miniature golf, donkey rides and Punch and Judy. Sea Life in Weymouth is a splendid place for coming face to face with all manner of marine creatures; to meet furry friends instead swing over to Monkey World, 10 minutes’ drive from the farm. Also just 10 minutes or so from the site is the Tank Museum, the biggest of its kind on the planet.
