Outdoor breaks in Purbeck
Woodland
Pitches
Dorset countryside

  • Woodland campsite on Dorset's Isle of Purbeck peninsula
  • Between Corfe Castle and Studland (both 10 minutes' drive)
  • Dogs on leads welcome; firepits allowed and available for hire
Surrounded by woodland and set deep in the Dorset countryside, Burnbake Campsite Corfe Castle is set up for quiet outdoor retreats in the rural South West of England. The pitches here are in two fields, one of which is spacious and open while the other, smaller area is surrounded by trees, allowing you to pitch up in a more secluded area (the latter is also nearer the main facilities block). With lots of wildlife and a brook running through it, the site is also home to good facilities, including well-maintained toilets, showers and laundry machines. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at no extra cost (but keep them on leads, please), and you can light fires in firepits or other containers off the ground as long as the weather conditions make it safe to do so (a limited number of firepits are also available to hire). If you find yourself arriving late and miss the site team, simply head to reception (where a site map on the door will show you where to pitch up) and then return to check in the next morning. Burnbake Campsite Corfe Castle is within a 10-minute drive of both Corfe Castle and Studland – handy if you want to visit a pub, tea room or food shop.

Open Field primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: I was cautious but optimistic given reviews. Exceptional site given that the place was full but we were totally spread out. Love the spread of ages and campers but with lots of room to spare no one got in anyone’s way. It is my first time using Pitchup but I’ll trust it some more going forward, Immediare likes are a network of cycle paths (Bridleways) and easy access to Studland for the Beach and Sea. We’ll be back for sure.

Main primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: The main campsite setting was beautiful and picturesque with plenty of space for a campsite that was fully booked. The facilities were very clean, with cleaning cloths provided in all areas to support keeping them clean and maintained. The campsite shop had the extras that we needed (tent pegs), and fire pit that we rented. The location of the campsite itself was perfect, close to beautiful Studland and away from any main roads.

Disliked: Hiring the firepit and bbq grill was expensive (£15 per night - which adds up after a number of nights!).
Very poor wifi signal across the campsite but it didn't bother us so much as we were there to switch off.

Main primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: The campsite is well placed with tourist attractions such as Durdle door only 20 minutes away, Tyneham Village 25 minutes ( must see along with the secluded beach nearby), and of course, Corfe Castle on the doorstep. The toilets and showers were clean and satisfactory. There is a little cafe and also a shop at reception selling basic foods. We got to choose our plot and were allowed to leave when we were ready.

Disliked: There was almost no 3/4G signal for our phones and the campsite internet was terrible. A good or bad thing - you decided! I had to talk to the wife!

Open Field primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Everything, couldn’t fault it. We stayed for 2 nights as the weather forecast was questionable, but had a great time. We were in the non electric open field which was idyllic. It was really quiet and we had loads of space. It was nice to sit and listen to the birds in the surrounding forest, we even had a woodpecker. The shop is well stocked and had everything we needed. The food shack was fantastic also. Shower block was spotless and having individual squeegees for each shower cubicle was really helpful. The location is also great as it’s quite central to all of the places we planned to visit. Great location, great facilities and friendly staff. 100% will be returning this summer.

Disliked: Nothing, it’s great! I gave 6 stars for the WiFi as we were right down the far end of the field and could get any down there, but who cares. We had 4g if we needed it.

Liked: Great facilities

Disliked: The music and ball games near our tent. If staying again we would pitch further away from the main facilities and safari tents to the quieter fields.

Open Field primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: The field is well organised. Even though it was fully booked it didn't get crowded and anyone had its own privacy. Facilities are cleaned. Shop is small but you can find anything you need. Staff are kind and friendly. All around there's a very nice wood to have a walk. It's well signed and paths are clean, so impossible to get lost.
We had a wonderful time.

Disliked: Shower rooms are really tiny. Barely any space to get changed for one person. So, showering and changing two little children has been quite a challenge.

Liked: Lovely quiet and relaxed site with open fields and lots of woodland, great facilities.

Disliked: Would have liked proper loo/shower block closer to the Open Field and also a water tap - a long walk to this

Local attractions

This site is in a truly cracking location – being on Dorset's Isle of Purbeck peninsula means there are top beaches in several directions, including Studland Beach (10 minutes' drive) with its fine sand and great views, Swanage beach (15 minutes) backed by a classic British seafront and Kimmeridge Bay (20 minutes), an attractive shingle beach surrounded by farmers' fields. Family-friendly days out are easy to arrange, as there are top Dorset attractions like Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre (20 minutes) and The Tank Museum (20 minutes) just to the north of Purbeck. Staying on the peninsula itself, you can ride on the Swanage steam railway (stations from 10 minutes' drive), explore the ramparts and ruins of Corfe Castle (10 minutes) or check out the inflatable assault course at Dorset Adventure Park (five minutes). The local area is a fantastic destination for walkers too, who have one of the easternmost (and, many say, most scenic) parts of the South West Coast Path just a few miles away. Top local rambles include the abandoned village of Tyneham (20 minutes) as well as the hilly but rewarding hike between Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door (25 minutes to the car park).
