  • A quarter of an hour from Barnstaple by car; Woolacombe 30 minutes
  • Family-run site for tents only; dogs and barbecues welcome
South Stoodleigh Farm is a friendly pop-up site in northern Devon where you can settle down among cows, sheep and horses for quiet farm stays. This tents-only campsite is conveniently located for day trips to either the coast or to Exmoor National Park, both of which are within easy reach of this quiet farm spot. This spacious green field has cold water for washing dishes as well as portable toilets and hot showers. The atmosphere here is very laidback and peaceful, surrounded by rural surroundings and quiet country lanes. All kinds of groups are welcome at South Stoodleigh Farm, and dogs are allowed as long as they are kept on leads and on their best behaviour when on site. The closest town to this family-run spot is Barnstaple, a 15-minute drive away. Here you can stock up on fresh food, take a stroll by the river Taw or visit family-friendly heritage sites like the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon. Other attractions include cinemas and Junglaroo, an indoor soft play park. The smaller market town of South Molton (15 minutes) is also within easy reach, where leisure activities include a fishery, a public pool, an indoor climbing wall and a honey farm with café and indoor/outdoor play areas.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely location. Glorious views. Long drop composting loo, drinking water and hot shower. Very basic, which is why I loved it. Fire pit and wood provided for £5. Lovely host.

Disliked Would like the trees to grow quickly to shelter from the wind. Southerly

Spacious site with a fire pit with a shower with warm water.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful little field with great views and clean facilities. Stunning place to wake up listening to the cows and sheep in the distance and watch the sunset round a campfire, lucky enough to have the place to ourselves too! Will definitely be back.

Bell tent (two person)

Liked The bell tent was incredibly well-equipped, we hadn't expected so much to be included and only actually realised the cooking/washing equipment was there on the second night! Views were lovely, site was quiet, and you definitely felt that you were in nature. The site has an atmosphere of wild camping but with a long-drop loo and sink (with drinking water), so somewhere between a field and a campsite!

Disliked The lock on the toilet was broken, and the shower ran out of gas while my partner was in it, turning ice cold, and due to the buildings being somewhat rustic they were very draughty so it was freezing! I also noticed the shavings in the loo were running very low towards the end of our stay. Due to the position of the tent (and the field more generally) there was a great deal of cold wind, which made it very difficult to cook, and also very loud in the tent. This may have been the residue of a storm though, and perhaps not usual. The other campers had positioned themselves in corners, while the bell tent was more exposed.

Reserved and quiet stay!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Felt remote and quiet but was actually very convenient for the local Devon towns. Plenty of village pubs within a short drive. Simple facilities that met all of our needs.
