  • Spacious, back-to-basics South Devon farm site with views of Start Bay
  • A 20-minute drive (via ferry) to Salcombe and 25 minutes to Dartmouth
  • South West Coast Path and National Cycle Route 28 access from site
If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Mattiscombe Farm Camping hits the spot. Sitting in hilltop fields and with spectacular views over Start Bay, this three-acre site is on a working family farm, with masses of space for kids to run around safely. Dogs are also welcome to come and join your camping adventure, but as there’s livestock in neighbouring fields, please keep them on a lead at all times. There are two fields, which share a number of facilities. The Summerpark field has two hot showers, two composting toilets, a cold-water washing-up station and a UV-treated cold water tap. Waypark has a chemical waste point with a wash-out tap and an untreated cold water tap; the water from this tap will need to be boiled or treated before drinking. Both fields have their own rubbish and recycling points. There’s always someone around on the farm in case of emergencies (a mobile phone number is given out on arrival), and if you want suggestions for days out, you can catch the owners around and about daily. Once you’re all settled in, you can pretty much forget about the car. Several country walks start from the farm, and pitches are an easy one-mile walk from Torcross beach, where there’s direct access to the South West Coast Path. Cyclists can join National Cycle Network Route 28 straight from the site too – hire electric bikes in Kingsbridge (20 minutes’ drive) if you want to take the strain out of pedalling. Traditional Devon pubs are found in the nearest villages of Stokenham and Torcross (both 20 minutes’ walk), and you can source supplies from local farm shops if you fancy a barbecue back at the site.

What customers say

This peaceful, "back to basics" campground earns high praise for stunning ocean views, a quiet vibe, and welcoming owners. Facilities like compost toilets and showers (often hot and clean) are well-kept. Guests love the spacious sites, beautiful countryside setting, and access to trails and beaches. Minor cons: limited dishwashing areas and compost toilet odor.

Waypark Field primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful quiet site, with nice views. Perfect for a weekend get away. The owner allowed us to switch fields for a better view when we arrived which was really appreciated.

Disliked We didn’t dislike anything, toilets are composting toilets though which didn’t bother us but I know some people don’t like.

Disliked We have visited sites with compost toilets that never smelled quite a bad as the ones at this site but they were clean and well stocked with toilet paper etc.

Summerpark Field primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loved looking at the sea from my tent. The showers and toilets and drinking water made it a brilliant site to base myself for 4 nights. Could have stayed longer. Farmer Ben was welcoming and other campers were also friendly. Walked to both Beesands and Tor Cross. Great takeaway in Beesands.

Disliked The uphill walk from the beach, without which there would be no view. So totally worth it for the exercise

Local attractions

Totnes (35 minutes' drive) has lots of cute indie shops, and if you’d like to explore other Devon towns, drive to East Portlemouth (15 minutes) and hop on the ferry to Salcombe (20 minutes) for dinghy hire, spas and a gin distillery, or head off to Dartmouth (35 minutes) and have a poke around the town’s namesake castle and a leisurely lunch in waterfront restaurants overlooking the Dart river. If you’re holidaying with the family, park down by the lake at Slapton Ley (five minutes’ drive) and let your kids and dogs have a run around along Slapton Sands spit (10 minutes). There are thrill rides at Woodlands Family Theme Park (20 minutes), and you can keep the kids entertained with keeper talks and big cats at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park (50 minutes). For a quiet family day on the lovely beaches of South Devon, try secluded Mattiscombe Sands for rockpooling and paddling, or head to Lannacombe beach (both 15 minutes) for safe swimming – the latter is also dog friendly all year around.
