  • Devon woodland site 15 minutes' drive from Exmoor National Park
  • Knightshayes Court 20 minutes’ drive; Woolacombe beach an hour
  • Yoga room; barbecue yard and communal fridge freezer; farm animals
Blissfully isolated in a peaceful corner of Devon, Lower Swineham occupies five acres of woodland about a quarter of an hour’s drive from Exmoor National Park. The setting (on a working farm) means that your stay here will be punctuated by the appearance of horses and assorted farm animals, plus the occasional passing deer. And that’s the entertainment pretty much sorted. If you don’t go anywhere without your yoga mat, you can practise your sun salutations in a calm, light-filled room with large sliding doors opening out on to the leafy gardens. For those who prefer to relax with a brew and a burger in front of a roaring fire, there is a large yard with barbecues and firepits, in addition to an indoor kitchen with a communal fridge freezer. The community shop in the village of Rackenford, a 10-minute drive across the A361, is well stocked with veg, fruit and other essentials; for anything fancier, try the supermarkets in Bampton (15 minutes) or Tiverton (20 minutes). After that, all you need to do is unwind, whether it’s by listening to birdsong or watching as the sunset gives way to brilliantly starlit skies at night. For the more active in your midst, epic hikes await among the varied landscapes of Exmoor. The national park stretches all the way to the North Devon coast (50 minutes), with surfing beaches like Lynmouth and sheltered coves like Heddon's Mouth.

Local attractions

An imposing Revival Gothic mansion, Knightshayes Court (20 minutes’ drive) is an exercise in excess, with rich tapestries, gilded ceilings and elaborate chandeliers. Outdoors, there are formal and woodland gardens featuring colourful camellia shrubs and cherry trees, plus terraced areas with expansive views towards Tiverton. If the wildlife on the farm has whetted your appetite for all things animals, Exmoor, with its ponies, deer and butterflies, might well sate it. Exmoor Zoo (35 minutes) runs meet-and-greet experiences with its residents, which include alpacas, tamarin monkeys and cheetahs. Watersports enthusiasts can break out the canoe or the windsurf at Woolacombe (one hour), a vast sandy beach on the Bristol Channel. Walk the South West Coast Path all the way to the Baggy Point headland, where you can stop for a cream tea in an allotment garden, and stay until late afternoon to see the sunset over Lundy Island.
