Barfield Cottage Campsite is a back to basics site within the grounds of a private house in north Devon, a mile and a half from the tiny village of Frithelstock and five miles from further amenities in Torrington.
Being just off the A338, this is a mighty handy spot to settle in for explores of north Devon’s coast and countryside – Westward Ho!, Appledore and Bude are all within half an hour’s drive, and it’ll take you roughly the same amount of time to drive to the Dartmoor National (or 45 minutes to Exmoor).
Not that you’ll have to go that far if you’re in search of a walk: there’s a public footpath just over the road that leads through the splendid farmland that surrounds the site. And if you can’t even face that far to go, you’ll no doubt be pleased to hear that there are fine rural views to be had right there on the pitches.
Life on site is quite fancy-free here: you can pick your own pitch wherever you wish around the field (which is fenced and gated for extra security). Well-behaved dogs are most welcome but they must remain on leads so they don’t hassle the resident sheep.
Facilities at Barfield Cottage Campsite include a shared firepit with log benches, an eco toilet, a washing-up area and a cold water tap. If you’re planning a barbecue, your best bet is to pick up bits at the farm shop six miles away (the nearest main supermarkets being 15 minutes’ drive away in Bideford). Alternatively, the local pub (five minutes’ drive) serves up good grub to eat in or take away.
