  • Well-maintained Devon family park just off the A30 at Cheriton Bishop
  • Five minutes’ drive to Dartmoor National Park; 40 minutes to Paignton
  • Modern facilities and two fishing lakes; café right next door
Whether you’re looking to dig down with family and dogs for a few days near Dartmoor, or wanting somewhere to lay your head on the way to Cornwall, Woodleigh Caravan Park couldn’t be better located if it tried. Near Cheriton Bishop in Devon, it’s just off the main A30 into the south-west, it’s right on the fringes of the national park and it’s only 20 minutes’ drive to historic Exeter. If you’re planning on sticking around to discover Dartmoor and Devon in general, bring your walking boots or bikes and get out onto local trails leading across the moorland, or ditch the car and catch the bus to Exeter from the stop outside the site entrance. But location is not the only thing that draws people in here, as Woodleigh is also a haven for anglers, with two well-stocked coarse fishing lakes to choose between. Other on-site pluses include the modern utilities block with chemical toilet disposal to the rear, and the presence of Woodleigh Coach House, right next to the park and just the spot for filling breakfasts, a cup of tea or a leisurely lunch (although please note it doesn't do hot food in the evenings).

Local attractions

For all you avid cyclists and walkers, there are plenty of local routes out into Dartmoor National Park (five minutes’ drive) – one of the most popular is a hike along the Teign Gorge from Drewsteignton (10 minutes' drive, home of a very popular foodie pub). This you can combine with a tour of Castle Drogo (15 minutes), built in 1910 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Road-based cycling routes include the Tedburn Loop (10 minutes), a ride from Fingle Clapper Bridge (15 minutes) across Dartmoor to Chagford (20 minutes) and the National Cycle Network Route 28, which wends its way through Devon from Okehampton to Salcombe via Throwleigh (15 minutes). The kids might pester for days on the beach, and that’s easily sorted with a visit to Ness Cove (half an hour), accessed by a subterranean tunnel, or strolls down the pier at Paignton (40 minutes). You can also keep youngsters amused on the water slides at Splashdown Quaywest (40 minutes), or take them to admire the mini Statue of Liberty and Stonehenge at Babbacombe Model Village (35 minutes). If you want to explore a bit further afield, check out the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth (55 minutes), or wander the gardens and spot the Rembrandt painting at National Trust-owned Buckland Abbey (50 minutes).

Powered gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Very nicely laid out, small touring and tent area round a lawn, with well planted landscaping and two attractive sculptures of deer. There is a good cafe for breakfast and teas right next door at the adjacent guest house. The history of the Woodleigh Estate is interesting.
The shower block is small, one ladies room, one gents, and a separate disabled, but they are new and clean. Lots of hot water, too. There are the usual campervan facilities. Friendly reception gentleman, happy to have a chat. It is a bit out of the way, but the fishing lake is attractive, and Exeter is 10 miles down an easy A road.

Disliked: No Wifi! The A30 road noise is a bit obtrusive at the bottom of the site. The hand dryer and hair dryer in the ladies were broken but when we reported this, the gentleman was very grateful and it will certainly be fixed by now, I think. The site fees seemed a bit steep for a fairly basic small site.

Liked: Very peaceful quiet site, shame about the road behind at nights.
But very clean and tidy, I liked that.

Disliked: booked to be near showers and toilets due to a disability, but didn’t get that.

From the manager: all our gravel pitches are the other end of the park and thats what you booked we are that small it is a very very short walk of 100 meters to the shower block also the gravel pitches are in the corner of the park adjacent to the a30 by 1/2 a mile if asked you could of moved away from the road kind regards woodleigh team

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: This site is really close the main routes and is small, quiet, safe, clean and really well maintained. Really friendly staff and smooth easy check in.

Disliked: Some road noise and site is on a slope in some places although I managed to park my van on an area that had been levelled but take blocks for your wheels if you have them. Only one small shower for the ladies block but as I said the site is very small and I did not have to queue for long to use it.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The initial service from Louise was amazing. She was so friendly and helpful. The park is well maintained and fairly easy to find

Disliked: The customer service is appalling from the man. Unsure of his name. He couldn’t even crack a smile when our kids were playing or said hello. He was rude about where we had put our tent and claimed we were on two pitches (despite being the only one on there! And Louise letting us know to pitch up anywhere!) he would stare at our kids if they dared to make noise and was generally creepy. We actually left a day earlier because we felt uncomfortable and didn’t enjoy our stay. The facilities are average, they could do with updating but reasonably clean. We Will not be returning unfortunately.

From the manager: you was parked on the pitch next door and when asked to move so i could pitch someone else you were fine we are a quite park and dont tolerate ferrell children which were rowdy and misbehaved we have to think about other campers and holiday home residents on site i would suggest a more built up theme park site were your children can run around being annoying that is not what we at woodliegh are about kind regards woodliegh team
