  • Dog-friendly site half an hour’s drive from Dartmoor National Park
  • Halsdon Nature Reserve half an hour’s drive; Exeter 35 minutes
  • Stargazing; 60 acres of woodland; communal fridge
With a sweet position close to the geographical centre of Devon (give or take a handful of miles, but who’s counting?), Chenson Farm is the place to go if you are someone who wants to boast about hiking in both Dartmoor National Park (half an hour’s drive) and Exmoor National Park (35 minutes). (Boasting is not enough, mind – you’ll have to do it, too.) This site, on a fairly remote organic farm with free-range chickens, pigs and cattle, has both grass and hard-standing pitches. Amenities include a toilet block with showers, plus chemical disposal, charging facilities and recycling points. There is also a communal fridge where you can store your burgers and bangers (sourced at a local farmers’ market or in Crediton, a 20-minute drive along the A377), ready for the evening barbecue. After dining, be sure to linger a while before retiring for the night: there is very little light pollution here, which results in tip-top stargazing. In addition to the farm’s 60 acres of woodland, which you can explore on shaded strolls with your canine companion, there are trails skirting the nearby River Taw, where you might spot kingfishers and otters (not surprising, given that the river features heavily in Henry Williamson’s ‘Tarka the Otter’ novel). If you need hiking inspiration, several books at the farm outline local walks, and the owners might suggest their favourite trails, too, like the one leading to Eggesford Forest (half an hour on foot).

From the manager: We are sorry that your stay didn't live up to your expectations. We aim to welcome all guests on arrival, where possible and ensure they are familiar with the site and the local vicinity. Unfortunately we are unable to provide WiFi to the site currently but do have good mobile phone coverage. Facilities are simple but there is a hot shower and working toilet.

Powered grass tent or RV campsite

Local attractions

While walking through Halsdon Nature Reserve (half an hour’s drive), on the banks of the River Torridge, keep your eyes peeled for woodpeckers and kingfishers, plus the occasional otter. Continue on to RHS Garden Rosemoor (a further 15 minutes) for splendid themed areas that include an exotic garden and an arboretum. Spreading around a spectacular Gothic cathedral, Exeter (35 minutes) is home to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, which occupies a distinctive Victorian stone building and displays local archeological artefacts, plus textiles and decorative arts. Crossed by the River Exe, Riverside Valley Park is a top spot for a picnic. The market town of Tiverton (35 minutes) has a 12th-century castle with a collection of English Civil War-era armour and weapons. Nearby, on the River Exe, is St Peter’s Church, the earliest parts of which date from the 1070s. On the outskirts of town, National Trust - Knightshayes Court is a Gothic Revival mansion with a walled garden and expansive parkland.
