  • Site with a wild-camping vibe near Yelverton, Dartmoor National Park
  • Half an hour’s drive to Plymouth; Drake’s Trail Cycle Path 10 minutes
  • Dark-skies pitches with firepits; just five minutes’ drive to pubs
Escape from it all and stay under the stars at Almost Wild, a quiet pop-up campsite in a wildflower meadow and with no immediate neighbours – except Dartmoor ponies, Highland cattle and moorland sheep. With spectacular rural views, the site backs on open moors for a real, back-to-nature experience. Facilities are pretty minimal here, so what will you need to bring to this lovely, secluded canine- and family-friendly spot? All your own camping gear, plus a supply of torches for wandering around after dark, as this is a dark-skies site. Low-key amenities do include composting loos but there’s no running water – the site owners can supply 25 litres of drinking water per pitch free of charge, while firepits are available to hire, with kindling, skewers and marshmallows for sale on site too. There’s an outdoor dining area for barbecue experts, but if you fancy a bit of human interaction, there are a couple of popular country pubs just a five-minute drive away. If you’d rather stick to self-catering, you can pick up essentials in the handy local shops in Yelverton (10 minutes).

Local attractions

From the site you can walk straight on to wild moorland in Dartmoor National Park, and have a gentle yomp up to Yelverton Rock (55 minutes’ walk). Take a dip in the river at Cadover Bridge (five minutes’ drive), a photogenic wild swimming spot on the River Plym, while the Drake’s Trail Cycle Path (10 minutes’ drive) follows an old railway line, providing easy cycling for families. If you feel like a day out in the big city, Plymouth (half an hour) offers fish-feeding sessions at the National Marine Aquarium, or you can climb to the top of Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse for views across the English Channel. There are lots of shopping and dining options in Royal William Yard, a former 18th-century naval yard, as well as tours and tastings at Plymouth Gin Distillery. If kids are part of your holiday deal, take them to play laser games at Plymouth Karting (25 minutes), or wait for a sunny day and treat them to a sunny day at Bovisand Beach (35 minutes), with its abundance of tidal pools for crabbing.
