Wolf Meadows Farm: Safe for a paddle

General

  • Wild camping on a farm by the banks of the Taw river in North Devon
  • A 40-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park and surfing beaches
  • Choice of grass pitches, meadows and river walks, masses of wildlife

Wolf Meadows Farm is a family-run smallholding on the banks of the Taw river in North Devon. Set within 30 acres of green meadows and woodland, the eco-aware owners are balancing traditional farming methods in a bid to practice sustainable and green farming methods.

There’s a choice of pitch for your wild-camping adventure, so you’ll never feel on top of your fellow guests. Camp next to the river to listen to the trickling water and watch out for the occasional otter; in the meadows, where the wildlife includes resident pheasants and squirrels, or bed down in the woodlands where two baby deer graze. Wherever you pick, you can wake up to the dawn chorus as the birds warm up for another day.

At dusk, bats fly overhead and owls can be heard calling across the river. Try turning off your phone to savour the quiet, and see if you can spot flitting warblers or hear curlews …

The smallholding is traditionally managed, with flower-rich meadows bordered by dense berry- and flower-filled hedgerows and ancient woodland. As well as a herd of rare and endangered Highland cattle, the meadows are home to a flock of laying hens and their guardian cockerel, so free-range organic eggs may well be on your breakfast menu.

Beautiful riverside location, so quiet and peaceful, pitches are huge with so much space between them, and a picnic bench too. Facilities are lovely, new and clean. Fire pits were very cheap to hire and useful. Staff were super friendly and helpful. We had an amazing time here, will probably be back in the future!

This place is amazing, we woke up to the sounds of running water and the amazing views everyday..John and Marcus are extremely good hosts and keeping this site eco friendly and doing their bit to help the community and the planet. It's a shame the local council is not helping them and stuck in their old ways..

We liked the peacefulness of the place and being surrounded by nature.
The guys were all so welcoming, attentive, helpful and happy. They ensured we had a pitch that was away from others to accommodate 4 couples.
The field was great (except being surrounded by long grass so no escaping wet feet, perhaps a path of shorter grass alongside the tree line would be of benefit.
The facilities were basic but totally adequate. The toilets were being serviced very regularly and were never dirty. The shower stopped working once and was fixed immediately.
