  • Wild camping on a north Devon farm by the banks of the River Taw
  • A 40-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park and Saunton Sands surfing
  • Pick your own pitch among meadows and woods or by the river
Looking for a wildlife-rich base in north Devon? Wolf Meadows Farm is a family-run smallholding with a wild-camping vibe on the banks of the River Taw, and set in 30 acres of green meadows and woodland. The eco-aware site owners practise traditional, sustainable and green farming methods on their smallholding, which has flower-rich meadows bordered by dense berry- and flower-filled hedgerows and ancient woodland. As well as a herd of rare Highland cattle, the meadows are home to laying hens and their guardian cockerel, so free-range organic eggs may well be on your breakfast menu. At dusk, bats fly overhead and owls can be heard calling across the river. Try turning off your phone to savour the quiet, and see if you can spot flitting warblers or hear curlews in spring… There’s a choice of spacious pitches, so you’ll never feel crammed in among your fellow guests. Camp next to the river to listen to the trickling water and watch out for the occasional otter; pitch in the meadows, where wildlife includes pheasants and squirrels; or bed down in the woodlands where deer graze. Wherever you pick, you can wake up to the dawn chorus as the birds warm up for another day.

Local attractions

Surfing dudes, there are chances aplenty to get out on the waves here, as there’s a surfing school for all comers – novice or expert – at Saunton Sands (40 minutes’ drive). And if you’d rather your feet stayed firmly on the ground, then pack a picnic, put the hiking boots on and get out on the wild trails of Dartmoor National Park (40 minutes). Treat well-behaved kids to thrills, spills and adrenaline-filled rides on rollercoasters at Milky Way Adventure Park (40 minutes), or let them chase each other around treetop rope courses at Go Ape Haldon (an hour). On a gentler day out for animal-lovers of all ages, book keeper experiences for the chance to meet reindeer and kangaroos at Exmoor Zoo (35 minutes). If you’re after some well-deserved adults-only time, there are steep valley landscapes to wander at Marwood Hill Garden (half an hour), which is particularly lovely in early summer when the rhododendrons bloom, as well as rose gardens and arboretums at RHS Garden Rosemoor (20 minutes). Anyone interested in history should have a look at the Boer War and Home Guard military exhibits at Cobbaton Combat Collection (10 minutes) or wander the Norman-era ruins at Okehampton Castle (40 minutes).

Liked Leaving

Disliked Paid for fire pit, logs etc never received them, no one on site had to ring a number kept going to answer phone, eventually got through but no one could be bothered to bring down the fire pit logs etc, eventually got a refund for the firepit. Logs etc. Plus the pictures on the Web page are of another site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (riverside)

Liked Amazing location for camping at Wolf meadows! the river running alongside the pitches is truly stunning, not to mention great for swimming in and watching the wildlife.
The animals on the farm are also great; we spent ages watching the Highland calves jumping around their field, right next to the tents.
The eco camp setup is simple, but what more do you need for nights away in the tent! Toilets and showers were clean. Perfect site highly recommend.

Disliked The water was turned off overnight which would be better to leave on, but didn't trouble us too much.
