Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A no nonsense site with all the facilities you need. There were small solo tents to huge caravans all fitting in nicely.

Price was great and Emma a gracious hostess.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Everything, no frills camping, no rules, the hostess, the well mowed pitches, the readily available wooden ramps to level the camper. The view easy on the eye, the proximity to towns with all the stuff you want. Convenience store in walking distance.

Liked COST!!

I was meeting family and just needed somewhere cheap to get my head down. I had seen a local car park in Appledore for £15 which i had planned to visit. This site only cost me £10 and I had the added bonus of a shower and no distractions.

I was a little late getting to the pitch due to travel, the owner had text me earlier in the day, I let her know I would be later then what the rules were (21.00 hours) and it caused no problems.

I was allowed to just drive up and pitch where ever. On this occasion, there was only 2 others on site, so I remained as quiet as I could to be respectful as they were so accommodating.

there is a shower and toilets. Shower was not the warmest, but from a sign on the wall, I believe it is solar heated, so it was warm enough for me to get clean.

Disliked Nothing worth me turning.

Liked This site is perfect.
Very slight noise from the road, but nothing to disturb your sleep or peaceful morning.

From the top of the field you’ll get a glorious sunrise. A wander in the dog field, you’ll also catch the tip of the sunset.

The toilet and shower facilities are lovely. Solar showers providing an actual hot steamy water, which is very welcome after a day at the beach.

You can walk down the very muddy track on the opposite side of the road to the river for a dip.
It’s close to a local garage if you’ve forgotten any essentials. And a great location to get to many beaches within 30ish minutes.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Easy to find, just off a main road, which us a benefit in Devon.

It's a working farm so we loved seeing the tractor at work and the pitch was at the edge of a worked field.

Lovely pitch, sloping so we put up the tent accordingly.

Showers were free and just the right temperature but not adjustable.

Lovely view.

Disliked On arrival, the main farm yard gave cause for concern, a veritable scrap yard. First impressions count, and this was not good.
The dairy has obviously not been used in years looks neglected as are the barn areas.
I know farming is a hard business and time consuming but the basics need attention.

Local attractions

For coastal days, the nearest beach is Instow, on the Torridge Taw estuary, 20 minutes’ drive away. Alternatively, set off to the north Devon coast for days at Saunton Sands or Westward Ho! (both half an hour’s drive), or Woolacombe (45 minutes). Offshore trips to Lundy Island run from Bideford (25 minutes). How about a hike instead? Both Exmoor (25 minutes) and Dartmoor (40 minutes) national parks are good places to get out for a proper walk. Cyclists may instead choose to take to the Tarka Trail from Barnstaple (15 minutes’ drive, or get there on the train from Umberleigh, a couple of miles away) Less energetic days out nearby might include a wander around Exeter (50 minutes’ drive, or take a train), pottering through the farmers’ market and shops in South Molton (15 minutes), or visits to RHS Garden Rosemoor and Dartington Crystal (both 15 minutes).
