If you’re in the market for a top-notch glamping break in a peaceful spot with luxuriant views of Devon’s Exe valley, then please read on – Valleyside Escapes may just be the spot for you. With just a few safari tents in a secluded paddock, you’ll have plenty of space around your pitch and the freedom to roam across the surrounding fields.
Each glamping unit comes all set up with hot running water, electricity and wifi (that’ll please the teens). Spacious and comfy, they sleep up to six people in proper beds, and each tent has its own private bathroom with a shower, loo and sink.
The kitchen has a fridge, gas hob and dining area – on sunny days you can open up the front of the safari tent and watch the sunset from your veranda as you cook up a barbecue feast (the site owners offer paella meal kits, order on arrival). Should the weather turn chilly, cosy up around the woodburning stove in the lounge to play games, read a book or just chill out as night falls.
Out and about around the site, there’s a play area with a swing and slides, as well as a mud kitchen (which kid doesn’t love getting covered in mud?). And adults, you can challenge each other to rousing games on the boules court.
An honesty shop stocks essentials, snacks and breakfast goodies, and on Friday evenings, the courtyard bar is open – glampers can buy local ales, cider and wine there at other times too.

There is much to do directly from this site: keep kids entertained with model trains and mini-train rides at Devon Railway Centre, or you can shop for cuddly toys and tuck into bistro dishes at Bickleigh Mill (both five minutes’ walk), a working Georgian water mill. And hikers, the Exe Valley Way walk is accessed from Bickleigh village too.
If you fancy a potter around a couple of stately piles, Knightshayes is a Victorian gem with parkland walks, while pastel-coloured Killerton (both 15 minutes’ drive) is home of an 18th-century costume museum and glorious Devon views. For a taste of city life, Exeter (20 minutes) offers up an ornate medieval cathedral, museums and lots of quayside pubs and restaurants.
Want to explore further afield? Well within an hour’s drive, you can be hiking, cycling or pony trekking over moorland in either Dartmoor (40 minutes) or Exmoor (half an hour) national parks. If you fancy a day on the beach, there are long breezy walks to be had on the shingle at Budleigh Salterton (45 minutes) and lots of rockpooling options at Sidmouth Town Beach (50 minutes).
