  • Small-scale site in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Five minutes' drive from East Portlemouth and the Salcombe ferry
  • A short walk from the scenic South West Coast Path
Hidden away in the South Hams, High Nature Centre is a wildlife haven located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This coastal spot is within walking distance of the nearest beach and the stunning South West Coast Path (roughly 15 minutes away), just a five-minute drive from the pretty village of East Portlemouth and the Salcombe ferry. The site is located on a spacious field that's divided into a handful or circular spaces for privacy. Wildflowers provide valuable habitat for wildlife like bees and butterflies, while a large standing stone creates a sense of focus in the centre of the field. The pitches are a short walk away from the High Nature Centre's other areas, where you can learn about natural food growing, arts and crafts or yoga. There's also plenty of covered space for guests to relax in whatever the weather. The local area has gorgeous towns like Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth a short drive or ferry trip away, so you'll never be far from great food and handy shops for souvenirs and supplies. An added bonus is the fact that the site is two miles from The Pig Nose Inn, a very special public house with 500 years of history that the site team highly recommends.

Sunset primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This was not what we expected, I think this is more for new age travellers.

Disliked: We didn't expect the toilets to be in a chicken coop and be compost toilets. Also only one shower working for the whole site.

From the manager: Hi there, thank you for your feedback. The team here are sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations. We are an eco-tourism campsite which values sustainability, diversity and inclusivity. Our Centre has been designed for everyone to enjoy regardless of their culture or demographic. We are new to Pitch Up so thank you for making us aware that we need to highlight the composting nature of our toilets. We also have a larger compost toilet cabin near reception but perhaps you missed this one. We sometimes struggle to find plumbers and electricians at short notice due to our rural location. The shower was only out of use for a few days and is now back up and running.

Sunrise primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: What an enjoyable and beautiful location. If you want to escape the traditional pitches and head for a peaceful, secluded location, this is for you. With no light pollution, the nights sky was a joy to behold. Run by very lovely people, only add to its charm.

Sunrise primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely rural nature of the site and well spaced and spacious pitch. A very warm welcome received, and to chance across the offer to have an organic meal on the evening of my arrival was really special especially as I was anticipating having to go off again to find food! And being placed at a table with a lovely lady initiated an acquaintance that saw us head off to the beach together the following day as an added bonus. Loved that the site is working so hard to be ethical, environmentally low impact and sharing the toils of their labours in the food they offer twice a week. Also loved that my pitch was in a ring of little (fairly newly planted) apple trees .. there felt something quite magical about that!! A lovely lovely site, very dog friendly and close to some of my favourite beaches, so reckon I will definitely be back to this one!!

Disliked: Nothing! Electric hook-up would have been nice for me, but probably goes against the ethos of the site so not a big problem for a 2-night stay!!

Local attractions

High Nature Centre is surrounded by dozens of sandy beaches and coves, some of which are well-known family favourites (like Gara Rock, 15 minutes away on foot) and others like Lannacombe Beach (15 minutes' drive) which are more rugged and harder to find. The site is also a short distance from the sheltered Kingsbridge Estuary, where you can experience sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking and other watersports in a spectacular location. The site team recommend Salcombe Dinghy Sailing if you’re interested in taking your first steps in the sport. Looking for walks? The Centre is close to the section of the South West Coast Path that runs past Prawle Point, Devon's southernmost spot, where there's a small but interesting visitor centre. It's also within easy reach of Start Point Lighthouse (25 minutes) where there's a spectacular section of rugged coastal scenery and great views out to sea. Cyclists will be happy with the fact that the site is located on National Cycle Route 2, so there’s lots of scope for pedalling through the surrounding countryside.
