  • Pop-up wild camping site in the South Hams countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Mothecombe beach and 25 minutes to Dartmoor
  • Coast path, bars, restaurants and ice cream parlour nearby
Which to dig into first? Tasty seafood and tapas or silky sands? Whichever you fancy, bed down at pop-up site South Devon Wild Camping in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, founded by like-minded explorers who will help divulge their favourite local haunts in the South Hams. With Mothecombe beach 10 minutes’ drive away, it’s easy to taste the salt on the air from these grassy pitches, but you’ll also find views of Dartmoor in the distance, too (25 minutes' drive if you want to take a closer look at the moors). Busy days may well be packed with paddleboarding, surfing and kayaking along the coast, or cycling or hiking on land, with coastal views a fan favourite not just for countryside fans but birds too. At the end of the day, return to the family-friendly wild camping where portable toilets and a hot outdoor shower are on hand and barbecues are permitted for meals. Dogs are welcome too, so no one has to miss out on the sea views. Follow the footpath to Mothecombe, where a 45-minute walk gets you to a choice of two beaches and food options including seafood, tapas, barbecues and flavoursome cocktails. The local ice cream parlour is a great antidote for any sweet tooth, with a laidback garden to bask in the sea views. There’s more locally sourced food in the shops and pubs in the local villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo (both 10 minutes’ drive), with riverside picks overlooking the River Yealm. For more choice, you can always head into Plymouth (half an hour away) for a slice of the city.

Local attractions

For keen walkers, there are plenty of trails to pick from river valleys and farmlands through the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and unbroken trails for all abilities along the coastal paths. Perhaps head out for a level stroll through Avon Valley (half an hour's drive) or challenge yourself on a coastal trek towards the rugged and remote Gara Rock Beach (just under an hour). Got the whole family on board? Pack a backpack, bring a bike or prep a picnic for Dartmoor National Park (25 minutes). Afterwards, meet and greet the animals at the nearby Dartmoor Zoo (20 minutes). Find a watersports mecca at the seaside town of Salcombe (35 minutes), sample fish and chips at the harbour, or treat yourself with some fine dining in one of its high-end restaurants. With Plymouth half an hour’s drive away, you may also want to tick off the marina’s historic sites, starting with Royal William Yard (35 minutes) and take the ferry to Edgcumbe House and Country Park.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (lake view)

Liked: Quick booking and response to questions.
Nicely laid out site with all pitches having great views.
For a wild/popup campsite portaloos were very clean.
Hot shower was a great surprise and although basic in terms of the shower cubicle(single on the campsite) it was very hot and also great water pressure. Put a lot of permanenet campsite showers to shame.
