  • Family-friendly site on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Devon
  • Tavistock 20 minutes’ drive; Sandymouth Bay Beach an hour
  • Playground; launderette; a 10-minute walk from Bridestowe village
Bundle up the kids and load up the car – it’s time to head west, to a splendid corner of Devon and Glebe Caravan Park, a peaceful site just over half a mile east of the village of Bridestowe (10 minutes’ walk). Its location on the edge of Dartmoor National Park (which starts just the other side of the A386, less than a mile away) means that Glebe should definitely make the shortlist of hardcore hikers, climbers (how many granite tors will you scale during your break?) and other outdoor enthusiasts. But there’s plenty for the less active holiday-maker too – from simply kicking back on site, taking in gorgeous rural views, to hitting the beaches of North Devon and Cornwall, such as Westward Ho! and Sandymouth Bay Beach (both about an hour’s drive away). Then there’s a different type of exploration, involving the area’s famed cream teas… On site, the miniature adventure course ought to keep the kids busy and entertained for a while, and protective parents can keep an eye on things from the nearby picnic bench or by rolling out a blanket on the grassy lawn. And when it’s time for a brew, the pub in the village serves local ales and ciders, as well as meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients; there are also a handful of watering holes within a five-minute drive of the site, along the A386. In addition to a toilet/shower block and a washing-up area, Glebe has a launderette and ice-pack freezing facilities.

Local attractions

Overlooked by a couple of bird hides, Roadford Lake (20 minutes’ drive) is a breeding (and wintering) site for geese, ducks and moorhens. Around the reservoir is a wooded area laced with walks, and at the Roadford Activity Centre, on the western bank, you can have a go at kayaking or paddleboarding. Tavistock (20 minutes) is known as the birthplace of the cream tea, and every June the town holds a festival dedicated to this delicious afternoon snack. Established way back (in 1105) and still going strong, the Pannier Market is the place to source fudge, second-hand books and plants, while collections at the Tavistock Museum explore the history of the town. The Victorian-era Cotehele Mill (40 minutes) is now a National Trust site – and it still still grinds flour. Check out its huge waterwheel and take part in a baking demonstration, then explore the estate, with its vast area of woodland, the tiny Cotehele House Chapel and Cotehele Quay, on the River Tamar.
