  • Peaceful dog-friendly site just outside Dartmoor National Park
  • A five-minute drive from The Granite Way; 10 minutes to Lydford Gorge
  • Firepits permitted; small food shop on site for essentials; pub nearby
Dallying on down to Dartmoor National Park for a dandy cycling or walking break? Perhaps for adrenaline-pumping activities or a dive down into some historical siites? Dartmoor’s Edge Campsite might be just the place, as this family-friendly farm site is just outside the national park in Bridestow, five minutes’ drive away from The Granite Way and 10 minutes from Lydford Gorge. Dogs are welcome at this pop-up place at a small extra cost, as long as they’re kept on a lead at all times – it is a working farm, after all. Firepits also have the green light here, so you may want to take advantage of the site’s small food shop to gather together your essential bits for the grill. The facilities on this site are well-maintained. You’ll have access to drinking water to keep hydrated and the convenience of flushing toilets to make your stay comfortable. Of course, food will surely feature in your stay too. Handily, there’s a farm shop 10 minutes’ drive away in Lydford. There are a few pubs here too that might make for a nice pause before or after the waterfall walk around the gorge. Otherwise, those of you looking for somewhere slightly closer by, there’s a pub 40 minutes’ walk away from the site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful views of the rolling Dartmoor hills, super relaxed and lots of space to choose your pitch and for the kids to play and the distance meant everyone had enough privacy and noise didn’t travel in the evening. Very relaxed with well behaved dogs and the staff were friendly and not excessive with rules. It was nice that you could have campfires and that they had an on-site bakery and made to order pizzas.
It was very much ‘off-grid’ with no phone signal or electricity.

Disliked: The toilets were a little too basic (no hot water, no light).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The young lady running things was very friendly and amenable, checking everyone was OK and cheerfully towing stuck vehicles off the field after a night's heavy rain.

The shower was really nice with plenty of hot water - don't be put off by the open air, it's a new experience and very refreshing!

There is wifi, best at the top of the field. Good TV reception.

Yes there are wasps (probably because of the bakery on the farm) but they wandered in and out without hurting anyone. Just keep sweet stuff under wraps - no problem.

As with all campsites you are at the mercy of the weather. Bring wellies and three times as many dry socks as you think you'll need, don't forget hats and sunscreen, and all will be well.

Disliked: It's not literally on the edge of Dartmoor, and it's an hour’s walk from the nearest pub

The site description could perhaps manage visitors' expectations better. It's certainly not within easy walking distance of the moor; you need to drive offsite to get anywhere except Lydford (an hour's walk away), where the Castle pub does posh lunches & real ale. If you want to walk round Lydford Gorge I recommend driving there as that can be a strenuous walk in itself.

The field slopes unevenly so a tent or a smallish (Transit or Transporter) van can find somewhere to pitch up pretty level, but our 7 metre van couldn't.

Unless you've brought your own entertainment you'll want to drive offsite every day (we didn't want to risk it with the big van, wet grass and sloping field).
