  • Spacious bell tents on a family farm in Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Chagford; 40 minutes to central Exeter
  • Weekend pizza nights and pop-up suppers on site; farm produce to buy
Mixing up the fabulous open space of Dartmoor National Park with the convenience of a ready-made place to stay, the bell tents at Yellands Farm Glamping make a fabulous pick for a family break or a couple’s holiday. The farm is on the southern slope of Meldon Hill, surrounded by splendid Dartmoor views towards Hound Tor and Haytor Rocks. It’s been here since the 17th century, so there’s plenty of history to the place, along with lots of mature trees and well-established hedgerows. And there’s lots of space too – each tent sits in its own individual field of around 3-5 acres, which you’ll share only with the butterflies and other wildlife that like to flit around the wild flowers. To help you make the most of that open space, when it's not too dry or too windy, you’ll get your own firepit for cooking dinners and keeping warm by night. A communal field kitchen with fridge is nearby too (along with a shower and compost toilet). You can buy firewood on site, along with farm eggs, fresh sourdough bread, homemade ice cream and ready-to-heat meals. For anything else you might need, it’s a 10-minute drive (or half-hour walk) to the stannery town of Chagford for a range of independent shops including a bakery, butcher, deli and wine shop – plus three pubs and several restaurants if you’d rather let someone else do the cooking. Alternatively, if you’re here on a weekend keep an eye out for pizza nights and pop-up suppers in the barn back at the farm.

Local attractions

Dartmoor is, of course, a wonderful place for hiking and other outdoor activities. A good way to start is with a walk across the valley to the remains of a Bronze Age village at Grimspound. Beyond that, the likes of Becky Falls (20 minutes’ drive), Canonteign Falls (half an hour) and Haytor Rocks (20 minutes) are good places to aim for. You may well spot various animals as you explore, but for guaranteed sightings of the park’s most famous residents you’ll need to stop in at The Miniature Pony Centre (five minutes). For more exotic species, head to Dartmoor Zoo (45 minutes) or venture into Plymouth (55 minutes) for the National Marine Aquarium. There’s plenty of history to explore as you tour the area too – perhaps you’ll make trips to Okehampton Castle (half an hour) or Castle Drogo (20 minutes) or take a tour of the attractions of Exeter (40 minutes). For a dip on the way home, there’s a heated outdoor pool in Chagford, or you can swim in the Bovey river a few minutes’ walk from your tent.

Bell tent

Liked: Everything! Fabulous hosts. We arrived to a warm welcome. Susan and Roly were so helpful. Roly makes a really lovely sour dough loaf. We had the option to purchase fresh eggs, bacon and yogurts.
The bell tent was great, carpeted, big comfy bed. Plenty of extra duvets and blankets. Loved the little touches like the lanterns and books.
The views were stunning. The location feels quite remote but we visited Bude, Torquay, Paignton and Teignmouth. All within an hour.
Had the weather been better we would have stayed on site more and chilled by the tent.
The shower and toilet was quirky. We were able to have warm showers. Kitchen areas were well equipped.

Bell tent

Liked: This was our first trip to Yellands Farm. We had a fabulous restful stay . The tent was beautifully decorated and we had a wonderful view across Dartmoor. It was great to enjoy an entire field to ourselves ! The outdoor kitchen was a real highlight especially with the boys. Susan and Roly were really welcoming and helpful. They had a lovely shop full of great local delights and I enjoyed learning more about improving my sourdough bread making! We hope to be back next summer . Thank you 🙏

Bell tent

Liked: The experience starts before you reach Yelland farm, from the wonderful surrounding to the exact directions to the farm.
On arrival we were met by the owners who were very friendly and they then proceeded to show us the facilities around the site.
After a short walk around we were taken down to our Bell tent which was situated in it own field, yes it's own field, with views of Dartmoor that went on for miles.
The tent was equipped with everything to make our stay very comfortable.
We loved our stay from the wonderful accommodation, rustic cooking facilities, to the river with a dammed pool and star gazing at night.
We as a family will definitely be returning next year.
Thank you for the most relaxing and enjoyable break we have had in a long time. Thanks Clare, Doug and Robbie'Lee

Bell tent

Liked: Wow what can I say!! Our whole stay was perfect. Susan and Roly were exceptional hosts very welcoming and made you feel right at home.

The Bell tents were super comfy, The beds and the quality of the duvets etc. Were superb, there was even extra blankets incase of getting cold at night. You have your own field to yourself so it's super private plenty of space for the children to run around in.

Our children loved it here the hosts have lovely children and our kids loved playing on the rope swing and the other facilities with Sam and really didn't want to leave.

A short walk from the site there's a beautiful lake which Susan recommended with a rope swing which the kids loved to swim and play in, We went there most days after exploring the local coastlines, Yellands is situated in the most perfect place a 50 minute drive to Torquay, Paignton etc.

All the facilities were great a compost toilet and a bucket shower, It was so lovely and refreshing and what a great experience to live that way for a few days. There's a fridge to store your food in and places to cook and eat you food with the most magnificent views.

If you want a break away from it all this is the place to be, Words can't do it justice you have to see yourself how magical this place is. We've found a true gem which we will be coming back to year after year.

Thanks again for an amazing stay, We look forward to seeing you next year. Claire,Scott,Grayson and Noah.

Bell tent

Liked: Me and 3 other friends stayed at Susan and Roly's farm for 2 nights and it is challenging to put into words just how stunning the location and scenery is. We each had a tent and a whole field to ourselves so there was lots and lots of privacy. The tents themselves were extremely cosy but also spacious and had lovely little touches such as lanterns and we all agreed that the double beds were EXTREMELY comfortable. And as someone who's not very confident with camping, Susan and Roly were excellent hosts and were more than accommodating and sensitive to the fact that not all get to regularly connect with nature!

We were also lucky enough to catch one of Roly and Susan's pop-up suppers. We're all still talking about how delicious the vegetarian and vegan food was. It felt like a real pleasure to be able to have an outdoor dinner with the spectactular views and home cooked food.

I definitely plan on returning with a new group of friends who are even more unfamiliar with camping than I am. The experience was incredibly nourishing and Roly mentioned that there is a gorgeous lake a couple minutes down the main path that is a must-see so I will absolutely be doing that the next time I visit.

Bell tent

Liked: I normally over-zealously research campsites, but as this is Yellands first year open, we didn't have any reviews to go on. But the photos looked great and the location was perfect, slap bang on the moor plus in walking distance of Chagford, which we'd heard good things about. So, we took the punt - and, as they say, fortune favours the brave!
The photos can't do justice to what is a truly heavenly spot: an ancient farmhouse halfway up a hill with a view to the south of just pure, glorious nature, dotted with the odd other ancient farmhouse. Each tent has its own field, each with this stupendous view. At the top of the hill, ten minutes walk away, is classic moorland with even further-reaching views and tons of wild ponies grazing.
The farm is owned by Roland and Susan, who have three sweet children, as well as a dog, chickens and a gang of piglets. The hosts were very friendly and helpful, but not at all intrusive. We were the only guests staying, but because each tent has a whole field to itself, I think you'd feel private and secluded even when all the other tents were occupied. The bell tent was brand new - the benefit of being the first guests! - and the bed was super comfortable, with proper linens, which is not always the case in glamping situations. We slept incredibly well, it was so peaceful.
There was a compost toilet and shower nearby, and a fire pit beside the the tent, and Roland provided some home-made sausages and sourdough; he said that at the weekends they will also fire up the pizza oven.
On Wednesday we had a beautiful walk into Chagford, which is on the other side of the hill past the grazing ponies. I'd heard that it's one of these great, buzzy towns full of independent shops and pubs and interesting people that make you want to move there immediately - and yes it's true, I found myself gazing into estate agent windows. Susan had given us some recommendations, including this fabulous hardware shop with everything you could ever possibly need and then some, including a huge range of obscure food preparation devices, such as a little guillotine for trimming french beans. The best tip was having a slice of bakewell tart from the Beachwood bakery - it's famous apparently, and it's obvious why. We had lunch in the pub before walking back over the hill to the farm. We didn't have to use our car once the whole trip, and which I loved. Of course, we were very lucky with the weather.
The two days we spent here were truly fabulous, and because we were the first guests we felt we had stumbled upon a wonderful secret. We will be back!
