  • Quiet and simple field site on a working farm on Dartmoor
  • A five-minute drive to Chagford for pubs and shops, walking trails
  • Fishing 10 mins; kayaking and climbing 25 mins; Haytor Rocks 30 mins
There are no apologies from the team of Higher Murchington Farm about sharing their views with you... views of Dartmoor, that is, stretching scenically all around. The owners here keep it simple – they’re busy running a farm, for a start – but they welcome visitors (and their well-behaved dogs) to come and share this slice of the wild Devon countryside. On the eight-acre field you’ll have plenty of room on the spacious assigned pitches; campfires are fine here too. Amenities include a private eco toilet and washing-up area for each pitch… and apart from that, nothing between you, the skies and the vast moor below. It’s a five-minute drive or half an hour’s (very pleasant) stroll over to Chagford, for pubs with hot food, as well as shops for stocking up; head down to the Teign for a picnic or a riverside walk into open countryside. A 15-minute walk out of town (or a 10-minute drive from the site), is Chagford pool, an open-air river fed watering spot where there are yet more spectacular views. This is an eco-friendly site, where the team tries its utmost to run the site on a low-impact eco basis with solar energy and water from the farm.

Local attractions

It’s a walkers’ paradise round here, with Chagford a handy juncture to join in the mighty Two Moors Way, a coast-to-coast extravaganza of some 117 miles (you don’t have to do all of it in one day…). Okehampton (25 minutes’ drive) is a hub for many of the hiking and cycling routes circling the edge of the moor, and a good place to hire a bike if you haven't brought one along. Fisherfolk are well looked after in this part of Devon as well, with day permits available for fishing brown trout, sea trout and salmon on the Teign and in the peaceful surrounds of the Fernworthy reservoir. If it’s the patter of tiny hooves you’re hankering for, head to Dartmoor's Miniature Pony Centre (15 minutes) for opportunities to meet, greet, groom and ride the lovely little fellers. For those in search of bigger thrills, Adventure Okehampton (25 minutes) has surfing and canoeing on its private lake as well as abseiling and archery, climbing and various high jinks on the high ropes. For views, don’t miss Haytor Rocks and the paths around them (30 minutes) or the ancient peace of Buckfast Abbey (40 minutes), home to monks since the 11th century.

Bell tent (Private restroom amenities)

Liked: Stunning peaceful setting. It felt very private, with plenty of space
Fantastic facilities - own sink with tap, own compost loo with a view, plenty of tables and surfaces and even bedside cabinets in the bell tent.
Great location. We drove to Chagford rather than walked from the site as we did a few things in a day - so many great walks, swimming pool.
Do follow the instructions sent in a Follow up email - I missed the email and ended up at the farm itself but were given very easy directions to find the field (go back via Murchington village then left left left I think!)
Couldn’t recommend higher. Can’t wait to come back and stay in the bell tent again.
We even had decent phone / data coverage which was great for arranging meet ups etc.
Thanks for a lovely stay.

From the manager: Thanks for the lovely review Donna, we look forward to welcoming you back next year!
