  • South Devon farm site with spectacular views
  • A 15-minute drive to Slapton Sands; an hour to Salcombe by foot/ferry
  • Barbecues and farm shop on site
The laidback owners of Wilton Farm just outside Kingsbridge in south Devon very much like their local landscape. They've been living in the area for over 50 years, but resolutely say they'll never tire of looking at the glorious views from their farm: after a peek at the site pics (go on), you'll probably a) agree and b) have envy… Wilton Farm is on eight acres of land, with splendidly spectacular scenes across the site to Salcombe and to the local village of South Pool, all tucked into South Hams countryside a couple of miles from the – also highly scenic – Devon coast. As it's a working farm, Wilton has stacks of fresh tasty produce to sell in its shop, and a barbecue area on site too to sizzle up a storm. Another envious sigh…

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Wilton Farm is a lovely, tranquil campsite. The views are beautiful and the facilities simple but clean and well-mainted. Loved the little shop, although we didn't have need of it this time. Pub in the nearby village is very cute with a good range of ales!

Disliked The roads leading to the farm are very narrow with few decent passing places. We managed in a small van, but larger camper vans would definitely have issues. Obviously, this is not the campsites fault but something for potential campers to bear in mind.

Local attractions

What a honking amount of things there are to see and do in the South Hams for holidaymakers of all flavours – coastal connoisseurs, book buffs, fisherfolk, foodies, watersporters, scenery seekers, history hunters, wildlife watchers and canny kids all trot to these parts for a slice of what they fancy. The coast is only a couple of miles away with miles of sandy beaches to pick from, but the Wilton Farm team recommends Mill Bay and Fisherman’s Cove, both scenically inspiring options for south Devon writer Agatha Christie. Nearby Salcombe is the spot for sailing, with surfing, kiteboarding and surf lessons available at Bantham about eight miles along the coast. Nature trailers can start out straight from the site, with birdwatching and wildlife watching close to hand too from the lookout spots of Slapton Ley, a National Nature Reserve around the biggest natural lake in the south west: look out for the cirl bunting, once almost extinct, as well as dormice, badgers, bats and otters. More of a history hunter? Ask the Wilton Farm lot for local tales of ghosts and famous inhabitants of the area, or drive down to Slapton Sands behind Slapton Ley, where the D-Day landings were practised (spot the recovered Sherman tank at Torcross).
