  • Wild-style camping on a south-facing site a mile from Holsworthy
  • Bude's beaches 20 minutes' drive; 35 minutes to Dartmoor National Park
  • Next to National Cycle Network Route 3; dogs welcome on site
Wild camping can be a fabulous experience… but it’s all the better when you can be absolutely sure you’re in a place where it’s safe and legal to spend the night. Aiming to take the stress and guesswork out of the process, the owners of Dartmoor View Campsite have set their place up to replicate the atmosphere of wild camping in a place where you’ll most certainly be welcome. Facilities at this Devon site have been kept suitably simple – grass pitches are completely off grid (so you’ll definitely want to bring a torch…) and the ‘wild camping’ experience is boosted by the presence of things like drinking water points, gents’ and ladies’ portable toilets and a rubbish/recycling area. Where you set up is completely up to you – it’s a pick-your-own-pitch setup here, with the only stipulation being that you leave six metres between pitches so everyone feels like they have space. You’re welcome to bring along a barbecue to cook your dinner here, with slate slabs provided upon request to keep disposables off the grass. Holsworthy, a little over a mile away, is your nearest source of shops and supermarkets; if you’d rather eat out there’s a great foodie pub a mile away in Pyworthy. As the name suggests, this south-facing site has lovely views – not just over Dartmoor, in fact, but also towards Bodmin Moor. Both areas can be reached easily enough for walks and bike rides, and it’s also handy to note that the site is on the route of National Cycle Network Route 3, so it’s a handy stopover point for those tackling the whole trail (or just heading to Holsworthy on a traffic-free path…)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The view is great and the area is so peaceful.
The drive to Bude and Summerleaze beach (you MUST visit and best at low tide) is easy and about 20 minutes. Close ish to Clovelly too. Kelvin was so helpful and even lent me tent pegs (don’t ask 🙄). Recommended!

(I feel guilty rating it low for Wi-Fi, I never expected it to have Wi-Fi, the mobile reception was excellent which was an added bonus.

Local attractions

The market town of Holsworthy (three minutes’ drive) is a handy place for food supplies, and it’s also useful to know that it’s got a leisure centre with saltwater swimming pool. For a larger body of saltwater, head to Bude (20 minutes), a well-known hub of surfing (and with several surf shops and surf schools too). Sticking inland instead, there’s plenty of action to be had at the activity centres at Tamar Lakes (20 minutes) and Roadford Lake (25 minutes) – including fishing, climbing, archery and all sorts of watersports. Garlands Trekking & Riding Centre (10 minutes) is a good place to try if you’d like to get out on horseback. If you do want to see Dartmoor National Park more closely, it will take you about 35 minutes to drive over there. A similar drive gets you to Hartland Quay and the South West Coast Path, or to the Big Sheep for a day of feeding lambs and watching the sheep races.
