  • Eco-friendly yurts between pines and broadleafs on a pop-up Devon site
  • A 15-minute drive away from Sidmouth and 25 minutes from Lyme Regis
  • Bedding for up to six people and a firepit; communal kitchen on site
No doubt you’ve heard of the Jurassic Coast, with its striking cliffs, gorgeous walks and fossils. Sweet Hill Eco Fort is just a 15-minute drive away from this renowned Devon coastline, and tucked in between pines and broadleafs, its yurts have gorgeous distant views over the distant coast. Atop Sweet Hill, the pop-up yurts each accommodate up to six people in a variety of beds for some time away in the woods. If you’re an early riser, take a seat in the seating under the yurt's outdoor canopy to sip your coffee along to the sunrise. For sunset sips, there’s also a firepit that guests can light up. A well-equipped communal kitchen is provided for packing lunches and preparing a cooked breakfast or dinner– or indeed, a cocktail of some sort, as long as you drink responsibly. Being eco-conscious, Sweet Hill Eco Fort uses solar wherever possible and the toilets are of the composting variety. With private parking on site, come and go as you please, and don't be too surprised if you're a busy bee with so many stunning spots a short drive away. Just a 15-minute drive away, Sidmouth has a dramatic red cliff and beach on the South West Coast Path, as well as watersports centres running paddleboarding and other activities. Lyme Regis, a fossil-hunting hotspot, is just a 25-minute drive away and Exeter, a riverside city with a Gothic cathedral, is 40 minutes away. If you’d rather lead with your feet, Sidbury is just half an hour’s walk away from the yurts. In the village, stroll directly onto the East Devon Way, returning for a celebratory pint in the village pub.

Local attractions

There are beach days of all varieties in this part of the country. Branscombe beach (20 minutes’ drive) has splendid rockpools, whereas Jacob’s Ladder beach (15 minutes) in Sidmouth has a large sweep of shingle and sand. Seaton (15 minutes) also has a beach, although you’ll have to schedule your beach time in between distractions such as riding the famed Seaton Tramway or stopping for cream tea. If you’re itching to go fossil hunting, the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum (half an hour) has a display of Jurassic marine fossils found locally. To source some fossils of your own, try looking for fish, ammonites and brachiopods at the Hooken Cliffs (20 minutes), taking care not to get close to the edge of course. For easy days out with the kids, there's The Ham Play Area (15 minutes) or the Farway Countryside Park farm park (five minutes). Seafield Gardens (15 minutes) has adventure golf and tennis courts. Meanwhile, at Powderham Castle (45 minutes), there’s the chance to walk goats, take a stroll among the grounds and castle or go bug-spotting.
