The beautiful sunset over a T5
That sunset
Downends striking sunsets
Another beautiful day

  • Peaceful two-acre site five minutes’ walk from Croyde Beach
  • Ilfracombe 25 minutes’ drive; Watermouth Castle half an hour
  • Café and bar; surf school, surfboard hire and beach shop on site
It’s quite alright if you want to unwind all day long at Downend Point Campsite, in the peaceful North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mind you, you may find that quite hard with there being two surfing beaches nearby, both accessible via the South West Coast Path: Croyde Beach (five minutes’ walk) and Saunton Sands (half an hour on foot). Yes, you’re in quite the surfer’s playground here… Backed by sand dunes, Croyde Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, although rockpooling and relaxing may help while away a few hours too. There’s a lifeguard service between May and September, and dogs are welcome on the beach outside of these months. Another walk along the South West Coast Path takes you to the Baggy Point Cliffs (45 minutes), or you can head inland to Croyde village centre (15 minutes), where you might decide to stop in one of the two pubs for a drink. Downend has its own café-bar too, which serves beer and wine, plus Sri Lankan curries, through the day and evening. Time it right, and you’ll get to see one of the site’s stunning sunsets over dinner. There’s also a surf school, surfboard hire and a beach shop on site. Clean and bordered by heather and hedgerows, the site has two acres of land. Facilities include clean, modern toilets, coin-operated hot showers and a washing-up area.

What customers say

Stunning beachfront location with sea views. Friendly staff are a highlight. Facilities are clean but basic, shared with a car park and cafe. Slopes and paid showers noted, but views and beach access make it worthwhile. Cafe and bar popular.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Location - wow!! Just perfection. Amazing spot for watching the sunset. Literally minutes from the beach so you can just slop back up after a swim. The little cafe next door, so good! Right little party vibe on Sunday night with really good Sri Lankan food. But wasn’t too noisy from the campsite. The staff were so friendly and helpful! We arrived late, they text ahead with instructions but ended up still helping us out when we arrived getting our van level. We only stayed 2 nights I could’ve done 2 weeks!

Disliked The toilets are quite basic and although it didn’t bother me I feel like some people might not like that. The showers are little wooden shacks without a roof so open air which I thought was fab! And the washing up facilities are again outside. So perfect for us as the weather was good but might be annoying if it’s raining!!

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Great location just a short walk from beach. Facilities were close by and included showers and toilets as well as a bar and outdoor cafe. Site was a on slight slope but no problem with chucks to level out the camper van. Amazing sunset views.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Wonderful views of the beach and sunset, lovely and welcoming staff and great food and drinks from the sunset bar and cafe right next door.

Disliked Only issue as a camper with a tent was the ground is very rocky under the grass so found quite a bit of difficulty placing pegs into the ground. So if you’re planning to bring tents make sure to bring thick pegs.
