  • Bell tent glamping at a small mixed farm just outside Dartmoor
  • Castle Drogo 20 minutes' drive away; Exeter half an hour
  • Private field for each tent, with bathroom and kitchen shelter
If what you’re really craving from a glamping break is the luxury of space, you’ll no doubt be most pleased with the setup at Acorn Huts. Each of the bell tents at this Devon site sits in its own private field, so you’re guaranteed to have a whole lot of space all to yourselves (and a whole lot of peace and quiet too…) These tents are part of a small mixed farm, so while you may not see much of your fellow guests you’ll most likely make friends with the various farm animals – sheep, miniature pigs, chickens and friendly dogs are part of the line-up here. You’ll be staying in a fully equipped bell tent, with beds made up and lots of comfy furnishings to make it all cosy inside. Lots of handy extras are supplied too, including tea, coffee, cooking oil and firelighters. In your private field, you don’t just get the tent – each field also has a private toilet and shower, plus a barbecue/firepit area with outdoor seating and free logs provided. There’s also a separate canvas shelter that’s got a kitchen with two-ring gas hob, plus space to relax under cover on a damp day. All of this means it’s pretty easy to sort out your own meals, but if you’d like to eat out then it’s handy to know there’s an award-winning pub about five minutes’ walk away in the village of Spreyton (and it’s also very well known for its cider, so it’s only right to sample some of the local tipples…) The village also has a good local shop and playing fields with spaces for football and tennis.

Pixie Woods bell tent

Liked: Due to technical difficulties with booking software the site we had booked, (Pixie Woods), was unavailable on our chosen dates so we were promptly contacted by the owner to apologize and offer us the use of two of their other sites, (Holly Bush and Leafy Bottom), to compensate and accommodate our family of five at no extra charge. Both bell tents were immaculate and cosy with a generous welcome package, the kitchen areas well stocked, composting toilets were well maintained and the shower was hot and well pressurised. Rain on the first night produced no leaks and didn't inhibit cooking and the tree clearing next to Leafy Bottom provided sufficient cover to not limit our enjoyment. Sunny days were spent with free range children chasing eachother around the fields and stroking piglets and a chilled evening around the fire. If you are going into Okehampton we recommend the 'Farmer Luxtons' farm shop and the 'Sandford Gate' automated milk and milkshake dispenser nextdoor Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend.

Local attractions

Outdoor activities are plentiful in this area, of course – the edge of Dartmoor National Park is about 10 minutes’ drive away, giving you easy access to all sorts of walks and bike trails. Spire’s Lake (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to go if you’d like to fish for carp; if you’d rather get in the water yourself then head to the open-air pool in Chagford (15 minutes). Much of the joy of Dartmoor is just to be found in wandering among the lovely landscapes, but there are also some nice attractions to visit if you’d prefer. Castle Drogo (20 minutes), a 20th-century take on the classic castle, is well worth a trip, as are Stone Lane Gardens (15 minutes) and the Moretonhampstead Motor Museum (25 minutes). Keeping it country is certainly no bad thing, but if you fancy a change of scenery, take a trip to Exeter (half an hour) to visit the cathedral, walk along the quayside and head below ground to tour the city’s network of tunnels.
