  • Small glampsite on nine acres of land in Exmoor National Park
  • Five minutes' drive to Combe Martin; 10 minutes to the coast
  • Private bathroom and sheltered cooking area for each unit
Back in 2011, Exmoor National Park was designated as the UK's first International Dark Sky Reserve – so the name of Under the Milky Way is a fitting one indeed. This small-scale north Devon site is inside the boundaries of the national park, about two miles from Combe Martin, and its rural location means you should be in for some splendid stargazing on clear nights. The countryside side location is also a good one for providing plenty of peace and quiet – you'll be surrounded by fields and woods so mostly you'll just hear the noises of wildlife (and the odd tractor from time to time…) There's a generous nine acres of land at this property, and the owners have made the most of it, spacing the glamping units well apart from their neighbours and ensuring each one has its own outdoor space where you can chill out and look up into the stars. Each unit also has a deck with a wooden shelter that houses a picnic bench and a cooking area with a camping gas cooker, a couple of cool boxes and a collection of essential cooking equipment. A stay here should be nice and cosy, as each unit has a firepit outside and a wood-burning stove inside to ensure warmth in all weathers. A shared area close to the accommodation houses a communal washing-up area, some phone charging points and an individual bathroom for each group. This is a particularly excellent Exmoor spot for an outdoor break – not only does it have Combe Martin village five minutes' drive away (or a 45-minute step walk) for shops and pubs, but it's also only about 10 minutes' drive to the coast for a beach, a seaside walk or a kayak trip.

Bell tent

Liked We spent 4 nights at this lovely glamping site with two of our Grandchildren.
Our round bell tent had lots of room for our belongings & the beds were very comfortable. We chose and paid to have our bedding & towels which saved on bringing quite so much with us. We loved the bright bedding, rugs, bunting & fairy lights it made it feel very cosy.
There was a log burner, but we were lucky to have good weather so not needed. The outside canopy area was very useful for cooking & eating, and had all the items ie, 2 ring stove, 2 cool boxes, utensils & cups & crockery as well as a water carrier & lots of lamps & solar lights.
We liked the fact that you are allocated a toilet & shower when you arrive so are able to leave your wash things there during your stay.
Finally Bridget the owner is lovely, she takes all your belongings down to your tent when you arrive, checked in with us during the week & finally picked up all our belongings in the trailer & returned them to the car.
A really lovely site that we definitely want to return to and bring the rest of our family

Disliked For us there was nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

To the coast first… it's a 10-minute drive to Combe Martin beach, where you can hire kayaks, set off on a stroll along the South West Coast Path or just spend the day relaxing on the sand and poking around in the rockpools. The beaches at Woolacombe (15 minutes' drive) and Croyde (25 minutes) are excellent for surfers, or you could hit Ilfracombe (10 minutes) for sheltered beaches, an aquarium and boat trips to Lundy Island. Exmoor has heaps of walks, of course – the Valley of Rocks (half an hour) being a particular favourite. Cyclists can try the Tarka Trail from Barnstaple (20 minutes) and there are easygoing rides on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (20 minutes). For family days out, head to Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes), Watermouth Castle (15 minutes) or Exmoor Zoo (15 minutes). A little further away, The BIG Sheep (35 minutes) is another good choice, with undercover options for damp days.
