  • Dog-friendly wild-camping site on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • South Devon Railway five minutes’ drive; Dartmoor Zoo 25 minutes
  • Lots of room for parking and ball games; several pubs and shops nearby
Duck down into Dan’s Wild Camping in Dartmoor National Park… Once there, there are many ways to while away the day, whether it’s birdwatching, walking, climbing, wild swimming, biking or picnicking. Peace and nature are in no short supply at this wild-camping Devon site with spacious grassy pitches, but note that there are no facilities beyond a compost toilet and a mains water tap with running cold water. However, there’s plenty of space on the field for parking and ball games; in addition, your well-behaved four-legged friends are welcome to tag along, as long as they’re supervised and kept on leads. The ancient woodland at Hembury and Holne Woods (20 minutes’ walk) is a great place to start your exploration of the local area. With the A38 five minutes’ drive away, you won’t be completely cut off either – there are beaches for surfing and bodyboarding around 35 minutes’ drive away. Of course, food has to factor in somewhere – handily, there are several pubs in the area (some within walking distance, others a short drive away), where you can treat yourself to a beer, cream tea or ice cream. When it comes to supplies, Dan himself or another member of his family will be able to point you towards a few trusted local produce shops and butchers; alternatively, there’s a small convenience store five minutes’ drive away, in the village of Buckfastleigh (also with a train station and yummy fish and chips).

Liked Lovely part of the world

Disliked Nowhere to camp as the grass was at least 2-3 feet high everywhere in the field. Contacted Dan who seemed to treat it as a joke. Had to pay twice for camping that night as we had to go somewhere else.

Liked The location was beautiful, biggest selling point other than the great price, was the ability to have an open fire (that’s the only way we cook etc when camping).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked - Beautiful views of woods and hills
- I was able to have a very quiet, solitary time, being the only camper. Dan lives on site and contacted me by text but otherwise left me alone.
- Very reasonable price
- Really close to beautiful Dart and Dartmoor walks
- Ony 5 minute drive from Buckfasy Abbey and pubs

Disliked The noise from Dan's electricity generator in the evenings (though I appreciate his options may be limited)

Great semi-wild camping spot!

Local attractions

Admire the splendid Devon landscape from the comfort of a heritage steam train, courtesy of the South Devon Railway, which first opened in 1872. Trains connecting Buckfastleigh (five minutes’ drive) to Totnes travel through hills and farmland, skirting the River Dart. You can also re-enact your Agatha Christie fantasies by taking part in special murder mystery soirées. Once you’ve reached Totnes – whether by car (15 minutes) or steam train – you can take a stroll along the Dart or have a go at watersports. There are views of the river and the entire town from the medieval hilltop castle, while the Totnes Museum, in a 16th-century merchant’s house, has local history displays. Big cats, capybaras and wolves are among the residents at Dartmoor Zoo (25 minutes), where you can take part in experiences like feeding the tapirs or the otters, being a keeper for one day or getting up close and personal with Dragan, the zoo’s male tiger.
