  • Dog-friendly pop-up site on a hilltop on the outskirts of Appledore
  • A 10-minute drive to Westward Ho! beach; walk to the estuary
  • Pubs, crabbing activities and ferries to Instow available in Appledore
No need to go searching for a sunset spot for your eves in Devon when there’s a sweet place right where you’re staying the night. Based on a hilltop on the outskirts of Appledore, Pitt Hill Campsite has simply stunning views at sunset time. However, it’s not just the sunsets that are set to impress… The 360-degree views of the sea and countryside are the backdrop for the daytime. Small and friendly, the site is also nice and quiet, meaning you should have plenty of peaceful time to recharge your batteries properly. Families, couples, well-behaved dogs on a lead – they’re all welcome (just keep dogs under control and clean up their mess, please). With darling Appledore a 10-minute walk from the hilltop, foodies should find plenty to please in the form of fish and chip shops, local ice creams and pubs (the site owners recommend one particular spot by the estuary with fish specialties and local real ales). When you’re not tucking into something tasty, take the kids crabbing at high tide, sit and listen to the Appledore brass band on the quay on a Monday evening or take the ferry across to Instow. The nearest beach is in Westward Ho!, 10 minutes’ drive away. There are three fields at Pitt Hill Campsite and the folk who run the place recommend snagging yourself a pitch in the two farthest fields – one is a long field and another has an ocean view. The pop-up facilities on site include four portable toilets and two gas-powered portable showers.

Local attractions

If it’s a family break you’re embarking on, there’s a nice set of family-friendly attractions for you to take the pint-sized family members to. The BIG Sheep (10 minutes’ drive) has popular sheep racing shows, along with a rapid rollercoaster and animals to meet. Take on the dodgems or a donut slide at The Milky Way Adventure Park (20 minutes), which has space-themed rides too. In Bideford (10 minutes), there’s a softer day out in store, such as rummaging around the historic Pannier Market or relaxing by the harbour with a coffee in hand. Saunton Sands (35 minutes) should be excellent for chilling out too, unless of course, you’d like to get in the water with your surfboard or longboard. There’s always the option of picking a sweet stretch of the South West Coast Path to tackle too. You might want to start with Abbotsham Cliffs (10 minutes), accessible from Westward Ho!, and along what was once a clifftop railway.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A gorgeous spot to pitch a tent - we pitched in ocean view and it really was a spectacular view of the ocean. We also saw several shooting stars - and only a 10 min walk into Appledore - the best of both worlds. Even though the showers were 'portashowers' they were surprisingly good - piping hot water and plenty of pressure. All in all a great value back to basics campsite.

Disliked: Nothing! We would definitely come again :-)
