Pods

  • Spacious solar-powered Devon cabins converted from Nissen huts
  • On the edge of Exmoor National Park, 10 mins' drive to Exmoor Zoo
  • Kingsize bed, woodburning stove and simple kitchen in each hut
Simple and spacious are the watchwords for the pods at Little Bray, where a small glamping site sits in its own half-acre space at Little Bray House, a Devon property with views across the Bray Valley. The units at this site, 20 minutes’ drive from Barnstaple, are certainly a step above your average pod – in fact they’ve been converted from World War II Nissen huts that hunt at the site’s wartime history as an occupied location and later prisoner-of-war camp. Each hut has a generous 25 square metres of floor space, giving plenty of room to house a kingsize bed, dining table, sofa, simple kitchen and a woodburning stove to keep things cosy even on chillier days. They’re off grid but have solar power to run lamps and charge gadgets. That means all of the essentials have been provided, without going overboard – it’s a deliberately simple setup here rather than a luxury one, to preserve the peaceful vibe and sense of being in nature. One of the real highlights is the large window giving views down the valley – at their very finest at sunrise, say the owners. The huts are well spaced to maintain privacy for each one, and they have access to a shared fridge, toilets and showers a short walk away. You’ll also be able to take a walk around the grounds, perhaps playing a game on the grass tennis court (when conditions allow), having a meal at the picnic table in the woods or hanging out in the swing seats. The site also has fishing rights on the River Bray, so fishing is available by prior arrangement and with a licence.
