  • Rural site with basic facilities, five miles from Truro
  • 10 minutes' drive from north Cornwall's beaches and coast path
  • Loads of space for games and campfire evenings
Have a jolly tiptop time at Jolly’s Top, a friendly family site on a five-acre smallholding five miles from the (also top-notch) cathedral city of Truro. With rural views all around and only a handful of pitches, this is the place if you long for peace, fresh air and that fab feeling of wide open space. This is good traditional camping as it’s been done for many a year, with facilities limited to a couple of toilets (one composting, one flushing), solar-heated showers, cold running water and a basic washing-up area. Recycling and waste facilities have been provided to help you dispose of your rubbish in a seemly fashion. With no wifi and no leisure facilities on site, it’ll be up to you to make your own fun. There’s loads of space to run around (for kids, dogs and indeed adults who’ve spent too long cooped up in the office) and play outdoor games galore. When dusk falls, gather round the firepit (available on site) for a cracking old-fashioned evening spent cooking bangers, toasting marshmallows and chattering away over the glowing embers. Come the morning, pick up some of the farm’s fresh free-range eggs to cook up a big breakfast. Supplement your brekkie with some local bacon from one of the area’s farm shops – there are several around these parts, with the nearest around a 10-minute drive away. You can also pick up all sorts of meat, veg and other dinner bits here, or find a supermarket in Truro. Should the British weather be experiencing one of its less impressive days, you can seek shelter, food and beer in the nearest pub, a mere five-minute drive from the site, or head into Truro for heaps of choice from pub grub through to fine dining. St Agnes, the closest town, has a butcher, bakery, greengrocers and other shops, and is home to Breakers Surf School and SUP in a Bag paddleboard hire.

Local attractions

Despite the rural vibe on site, you’re actually only a couple of minutes’ drive from the A30, giving you easy access to major attractions across Cornwall. It will take you around half an hour to drive to St Michael’s Mount, 45 minutes to get to the Eden Project and an hour to reach Porthcurno and the fab Minack Theatre, on the cliffs overlooking the sea. The famed beaches of Cornwall’s coastline are close by as well; it’s just a 10-minute drive to the surfer’s fave Trevaunance Cove and 15 minutes to the golden sands of Perranporth beach. The beaches of Porthtowan and Chapel Porth are also a short drive away, as is the north Cornwall section of the South West Coast Path. If you’d like to get in or on the water, make the half-hour journey to Newquay’s watersports centre, for a range of activities including kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering. You can also take surf lessons up here to let you in on the secrets of standing up on that board. Closer to home, there are loads of footpaths, bridleways and cycle trails passing by the site. Walk a mile to Chacewater or Blackwater and you can join the Mineral Tramways coast-to-coast path, which follows old tram and railway lines that once serviced the area’s mines. If you’ve not brought a bike you can hire one from Bissoe, 10 minutes away. It’s also a 10-minute drive to a riding centre where you can join groups catering for all levels from beginners through to experienced riders.
